The Shadow of My Ancestral Tree is a poignant ode to the struggles, barriers, and constant othering faced by migrants, refugees, and all those in between, who must work twice as hard to be even half as valued.
Solim has poured her heart into this work, rallying us with her sharp, unfiltered words to stop bowing down to systems of injustice and oppression. As a first-generation immigrant, she has offered us an inside look into the sacrifices and generational trauma of her own family, skilfully linking it with the broader, systemic forces that continue to shape immigrant lives.
Thematically divided into six sections as Tears, Body, Heart, Mind, Soul, and Voice, each set of poems is raw, passionate, mournful, and wrought with disenchantment and righteous anger, yet simultaneously full of hope, purpose, faith, and gratitude. And beyond the themes, Solim’s poetic craft is a thing of beauty on its own.

The more I read the poems that were written, the more I found myself deeply resonating with what it had to offer.
‘The Shadow of my ancestral tree’ is a moving anthology, which explores themes of generational trauma, identity, womanhood, loss and making sense of the world around us. It is rich and thought provoking in the way we see the world through this lense, as well as as our own self in a society that may look at us indifferently.
Each poem is captivating in its own way, with lyrical prose and tones that are used to help bring about the themes more. Each set of poems are categorised to represent the human spirit, of tears, body, heart, mind, voice and soul. Each element are used to represent our situation more.
My particular favourite poem is ‘looking out the window,’ at the start of the section with tears. The poem captures the essence of dream vs reality, and how the negative situations that one can face in their childhood influences the person they are now. It helps to connect with an inner struggle that is needed to be called out. Having this, as well as other poems with similar themes, is moving and motivational in its own way.
All of this, and more, makes you realise that no one is particularly alone. The experience with our struggles is universal and it can be recognised if we have the right voice to address this and connect with one another. And this is where it does that well. You hear the authors voice, executing this format perfectly to help broaden her experiences with the wider world.
Overall, it is a compelling anthology, and I am delighted to have read it. It is suggested to look at the trigger warnings before you pick it up.
Nonetheless, I am glad that there are voices addressing these experiences and issues that are needed to be said.

This intermingling of politics, home and desire combine to portray the immigrant rightly as the rounded human beings they are. I found the most compelling poems in the collection to be the ones where she acknowledges the lives of her parents and grandparents and expresses gratitude towards them.
The collection titled ‘Soul’ is one where I think Solim branched out artistically in terms of stylistic choices in her poems and it adds an element of dimension to her writing. I’ve narrowed my favourite lines to two in the collections. Firstly: ‘Not everything must be tangible to exist’ - Grief. This perfectly encapsulates the invisibility of generational immigrant experiences. And secondly: ‘Heavy is the head that bears it/And our heads have been bowed for too long’ - Confidence. I don't know where to begin. The emotions I felt while reading this anthology. I loved pretty much every single poem. I could relate to each one, in some way or another. It felt like I was really being heard and seen.
Especially when I read 'Her Name Was Happiness', I ended up in tears. There were many others I personally related to, but if I were to name them all, I'd be here typing away all night. After I finished, I just had to sit with my thoughts.
I need to buy a physical copy now so I can read it all over again and annotate it!
The only thing I'd like to point out is that it would have been good if there was a trigger warning for some of the poems that were about heavier topics.
My final thoughts: if you're a woman, POC, Muslim, or even none of the above, still give this a read!

Covering a range of themes, The Shadow of my Ancestral tree is a hauntingly beautiful collection. This poetry collection has something for everyone but especially for children of immigrant parents. I think it takes a lot of bravery to lay your soul out on paper for everyone to read. However, in this poetry collection it's done so beautifully. There is hope and heartbreak and guilt, and the collection is a gorgeous insight into the complexities of the human heart and human emotions. At times it hit really close to home for me, but I think that is a sign of a beautifully good book, a book that makes you feel and think; books that you can relate to and those that you can't but teach you about experiences and lives different to yours.
I flew through this in no time! A collection that feels deeply personal and intimate yet also encompasses the lives of so many people, what a gorgeous poetry collection this is.

“Anger is the broken face of someone who just wants to be loved”.
This poetry book spoke to my heart, in many ways. I related to it on so many levels. My favourite poem is “Anger”.
The language is so easy to understand and the way Nasha translates her emotions onto paper, each poem had me left feeling speechless. I was excited to pick up this book as it is written by a female south Asian POC whom I thought I would resonate with. It greatly surpassed my expectations and I was moved within 5 minutes of reading the poems. The way the author speaks of many relatable topics is commendable - be it generational trauma, broken homes, harassment, the current mass genocide in Palestine, situationships, love (the list goes on). Reading this book, I was hooked onto the poems as if she had written directly about my life. There is a range of different themes covered and I can see how vulnerable the author has had to become to make this possible. Will definitely be recommending this to add to your reading list - you won’t regret it!

Excellent book. Enthralling from start to finish, with a vast array of topics being covered that kept me hooked from poem to poem. Laughs, thought provocation and tears are just some of the experiences I had reading and was thoroughly engaged from start to finish. This is a read that I will go back to frequently and can pick up when I want to sit down and be in prolonged deep thought, or if I simply just want to read one of the poems and have something to think about for the day. The poems are deep and the front cover was really lovely. It’s a quick read, and the writer does write well.
Some words and phrases were regularly repeated, and I do prefer it when longer poems are punctuated. (As a narrative poet myself, that’s just personal preference.)
Overall, I enjoyed the book as many of the poems were relatable. I really enjoyed The Tale Of Two Cities and Elephant Sanctuary.

This was a lovely poetry collection, thank you to the author for sending this my way for a honest review.
This was powerful, some poems for sure resonated with me way more than other ones. It is a beautifully powerful anthology which focuses on many topics: grief, generational trauma, hope; feminism, womanhood, political issues that are going on in the world too. The author worked hard at giving us a glimpse into the lives of people and especially the voiceless. I particularly appreciated the emphasis on the lives of young women from immigrant backgrounds and specifically brown women.
From the very first poem it is clear we are following a deeply personal journey. You can feel the sorrow in some of poems. I could not help but feel emotional at the poem “Empaths” it just describes a current life situation. This anthology is just captivating and I think there is something in there for everyone. It reminds us of the sacrifices made by our families and ancestors who lived a hard life in order to give us a better one. And also touches on how dealing with that is also difficult.

What a captivating read. After page 5, 'Asian Daughters' I knew that I had stumbled on the unique lyrical writings of a soul that feels on an astronomical scale, and is able to convey that so well. As I turn each page, I resonate with each and every poem. I almost don't want the poems to end, as I'll be stuck waiting for more.

I highly recommend everyone to read this book. It is such a good read and so relatable. Every poem has been written so beautifully and I resonate with many throughout the book. Such raw emotions have been captivated. Many generations will relate and I am so proud of Nasha!
