I picked up Amanda Chay's "Girlfriend's Guide to Lupus" to better understand a friend's journey with the disease. Boy, was I captivated by page 2. For a first-time author, Chay absolutely nails it. Her writing is as down-to-earth as it gets—honest, raw, and refreshingly candid. It's like sitting down for a coffee chat with your best friend, where you hash out the unvarnished truth together. Even though I don't have Lupus, I found myself reading every word—yes, it's that good and that funny. This isn't just a book for those living with Lupus; it's a masterclass in approaching chronic illness with humor, grace, and helpful advice. My only wish is for someone to craft a similar guide for Hashimoto's Disease, which I happen to have. Until then, Amanda Chay has set the gold standard for how to tackle the topic of autoimmune diseases in a way that's both engaging and informative.
This book is great for anyone who has been diagnosed with Lupus or anyone who has a loved one with Lupus and wants to understand this disease more. It is written in a captivating way and makes you feel less alone in your diagnosis!
If you have Lupus (or love someone who does), I highly recommend this book! It is indeed a “girlfriend’s guide” as it feels completely like I’m talking with a girlfriend who also has lupus — the writing style is key! I’m feeling less alone now! Thank you for writing it and for writing it so well.
I can use one word to describe this book: Supportive. Courageous. Practical. I know; I know. That’s more than one word but I couldn’t stop. It’s really a great book. Amanda’s advice is intelligent, logical, and is presented in a way that encourages the reader to say, “Yeah, she understands.”
I don’t have Lupus and I’m no girlfriend, but I found the book most interesting. The author speaks to the reader knowingly and does not talk down. The book is primarily for the person with Lupus; how to deal with the symptoms of Lupus, how to take care of yourself, and how to develop a support system of family and besties. The book is also an important read for those family members and besties: How can I support? What can I do?
The book also touched me. Two of my cousins dealt with Lupus, and it was really tough for them and for their families.
I applaud Amanda for her well-written book that will help so many people. I also thank Amanda for her hard work and her courage.
Most informational book ever. After getting diagnosed, I had no one to talk to about it. My dr lives in a different state and I have no family or friends who know anything about lupus. This book has taught me so much about it and helps me feel not so alone while I fight this battle. It’s a must read for anyone with lupus or know a loved one with it ❤️
