This baby signs book is exceptionally durable and a wonderful part of our nursery, when considered as a toy. But we haven’t connected the signs and words just yet.
Moral: We need to communicate!
Length: There’s only 22 signs, so this is pretty short.
Favorite Line: “Where is the baby hiding?”
Overall impression: There’s nothing to hate on about this book. There are 22 words that would really help Mavis let us know what’s in her brain. There are culturally diverse families sharing the knowledge. I just wonder how repetitive we have to be with this book to get her to use the signs consistently.
The good: The book shows common signs used in context, so caregivers have an idea of how to integrate signs into their communication! The explanations for how to make the signs are also very clear. The bad: Nowhere does it name or mention that this is American Sign Language, or ASL. It's all just "signs." Not respectful or accurate.
The story isn't great and doesn't flow as much as it could, but that isn't its purpose. It's a sturdy book with easy to maneuver flaps that give detailed instructions for different baby signs.
