Earth, Fire, Energy, Wind, Shadow, Chaos, Technology, Water

“… New York was hit hard, so a lot of the land that once existed doesn’t. A lot of the cities were combined because it has even less land now than it did before. This whole chunk that was Brooklyn and Long Island is gone. Fell into the sea or something.”

This is why we love a dystopian novel. Stephanie L McGinnis has taken a premise and run with it, so that our heroes are attempting to survive in the city of ‘Yorklyn’ under Angel’s Big Brother eye as people have to deal with her Chaos. However, this mix of gloomy future world and eight types of magik* is slightly confused, not just for the reader but also for protagonist Kara, because “Tech didn’t seem to follow the elemental pattern”.

‘The Lessons of Magik’ is jam-packed with all the things you would expect from a fantasy novel but there is also that strange post-apocalyptic Earth riding alongside. Intended for a YA audience (think Netflix’s ‘The 100’ with a bit of Harry Potter thrown in), this is not a complex story, rather a fast-paced ride through a future with a sinister, but not overt, message.

There are four easily-identifiable characters at the centre of this story, but they don’t necessarily sit comfortably alongside each other (think: teenage angst), and these are supported by an impressive cast of incidentals. What is nice is the ease at which we can readily identify with two or three of the principals, either at some point in our lives, or the lives of those we are closest to. When Kara finds she can’t control her magik (Energy) her relationships start to suffer, which seems fairly normal for young adults. Ryan is far more stable, and has a single-mindedness shared by Killian, as they both try to find missing loved ones. McGinnis’s antagonist is the aptly named Angel (her magik is the dark Technology) who simultaneously seems to want to control and destroy the world they inhabit.

There is a lot going on in this book, and while some of the content might not appear target audience age appropriate (setting a bad example), this is a bleak world where our social norms are long in the past. As first-in-series, there is a plenty of set up and a somewhat unexpected ending which doesn’t quite provide resolution. Note one Amazon listing, The Lessons of Magik is Book 1 of The Descendants Series (50 book series)! Nevertheless, the world-building is considered, the parallels to our lives well drawn and, at the end of the day, this is simply a great read.

* the ‘light’ Earth, Fire, Energy, Wind; and the ‘dark’ Shadow, Chaos, Technology, Water.

The Lessons of Magik (The Descendants Series Book One) by Stephanie L McGinnis is a fast-paced, young adult dark fantasy read.

In the future, post-apocalyptic, dystopian community of Yorklyn (a fantasy hybrid of what was once New York and Brooklyn in the United States) those known and identified as Descendants, and the use of Magik, (illegal powers of certain individuals) are not tolerated, and any misdemeanour against the state is punishable by a violent, public event. Yorklyn is ruled by Angel, herself a Descendant, who just aims to rule the world and make her subjects obey her every command. No one is safe, not even children or teens in her realm: Kara’s mother works for Angel and Kara and her younger brother Dawson are just regular kids who just to get on in life. Twins Ryan and Killian are her schoolmates, and not only are they Descendants, they also use Magik, which is a threat to their safety. Kara discovers her own Magik power, Energy, is difficult for her to control.

Book 1 of this interesting, disturbing fantasy story, where we are introduced to four main protagonists, whose stories will develop in subsequent volumes, is well worth a read.

Just one point: the Kindle version does not have a proper thumbnail, merely a photo of the paperback cover.

A riveting dive

The Lessons of Magik captivated me from the very first page, whisking me away into a realm where magic reigns supreme and danger lurks at every turn. As the debut installment of The Descendant Series, it sets the stage for an epic journey filled with mystery, adventure, and unexpected twists. What struck me most about this book was its richly developed characters. From Kara's unwavering determination to protect her family to Ryan's relentless pursuit of justice, each character is imbued with depth and complexity, making them feel like old friends rather than mere fictional creations.
The world-building is equally impressive, with vivid descriptions transporting me to Angel's city and beyond. I found myself completely immersed in this fantastical universe, eagerly turning pages to uncover its secrets and unravel the mysteries that lie within.
While I thoroughly enjoyed The Lessons of Magik, there were moments where the pacing felt slightly uneven, with certain scenes rushing by while others lingered for too long. Additionally, I yearned for more insight into the history of magic and its significance within the story.

Majic and Dystopia

I read The Lessons of Magik and I liked the mix of dystopia and urban fantasy. I liked the setting and I liked how the rules make magic feel dangerous and illegal. I appreciated the fast pace and I liked that the chapters switch between Kara, Ryan, and Killian, because it helped me see the world from different angles. I sometimes felt a little confused by the point of view changes, but I stayed engaged.

I liked Kara’s constant worry for her family, and I appreciated how her fear felt believable. I liked Ryan’s focus on justice and I liked his search for his missing mother. I appreciated that Killian felt protective and direct, and I liked the tension between the characters. I liked Angel as a villain because she felt calm and threatening at the same time.

I appreciated the themes of family, protection, and good versus evil. I liked the action and I liked the suspense. I also liked the chemistry and the push and pull in the relationships. I enjoyed the story.

I finished the book wanting more resolution, but I still felt it was a solid start. I think this was a good read about magic, danger, and a dark city setting.

The Lessons of Magik introduces a fantasy world filled with mystery, discovery, and the early stages of a much larger journey. From the start there’s a sense that the characters are stepping into something bigger than themselves, which kept me curious about where the story was headed.

I enjoyed watching the magic and relationships unfold as the foundation of the series is set. The pacing takes its time building the world and the characters, which helps establish the stakes moving forward. While a few moments could have moved a bit faster, overall it’s a solid opening for readers who enjoy fantasy stories centered around learning, growth, and discovering hidden abilities.

What stood out to me most is the sense of potential this first book creates for the rest of the series. It feels very much like the beginning of a larger arc, laying the groundwork for deeper conflicts and character development ahead. If you enjoy fantasy series where the world and its magic gradually expand with each book, this is a promising start that leaves you curious to see where the journey goes next.
