The book I read to research this post was Keeping Fit All The Way by Walter Camp which is a very good book which I downloaded from kindle. This book was out of copyright and free on kindle and apparently Walter used to be President of the Chamber Of Commerce in America. There is no cutting edge technology in this book but it's well written and the information is good. Apparently despite America producing many top athletes and other top sports people, over 50% who leave school aren't fit enough to join the military. I think that figure is probably optimistic. Anyway he argues that the military should take on people who aren't fit and work on getting them fit. He writes about many of the fitness tasks they do in the military so you can work at getting your fitness up to this level. One task is walking 1 1/2 miles with 8 pound iron bars held in the middle. In the army one soldier would carry these outwards and another would carry them back. Apparently at the time was published a recent fad was live bacillus milk and of course is the healthy bacteria in this milk helps improve the population of healthy bacteria in your gut. This stuff is still being sold in things like Actimel but he argues the nutrients in the milk are probably more useful than the bacteria although he does think there is definitely something in it. With your fitness you are probably better off doing a little exercise frequently rather than doing loads something like once a week. I agree with him about that. This book is around a 100 pages so isn't all that long and much of it is an exercise plan. It's an enjoyable book nonetheless and very interesting.
