What a beautiful story. I laughed, I cried, I rejoiced, I grieved, I held my breath and I exhaled. I have never read a story before that combined elements of romance, grief and loss, second chances, crime fighting, friends like family and marriage challenges so seamlessly and beautifully. And the emotions on the scenarios were so relatable and spot on. I could so resonate with several of them and was impressed to see the emotions I have faced so accurately worded. A few of my favorite quotes were -I prayed harder, cried harder, and loved my husband harder. I refused to let the hard days win -There were days I still felt like I was drained of every ounce of effort I had inside of me -It had been a year of heartache and struggle intermingled with grace and hope -The emptiness inside me was an endless cavern, dark and cold
This book is something you should read slowly and take in every moment as two people learn about themselves. I loved how the author captures a sweet relationship between Jess and Bryan. Oh how I enjoyed seeing each layer opened as the characters started to trust each other. This story will be one I will remember forever because it shows a realistic look at how a relationship with God is the foundation to happiness and peace.
Jess is a unique character and I was able to relate to her very easily. Her gift is being able to read others and decipher traits about them. I have this discernment that can only be described as a feeing I get. I can sense when something is going to happen and sometimes I can tell you exactly what will happen. Some people have called me weird but I know this ability is from God. Jess uses her gift to help others but still struggles with how it can be a burden to her. As she starts to be interested in knowing God, you see her heart open and begin to hunger for God.
Bryan is such a kind and gentle person. The attraction he feels for Jess when they first met was very believable. Sometimes you meet someone and just hit it off instantly. The more we get to know him, the more endearing he becomes. He is one of the good guys that women try to find. His faith is steadfast and he seeks God in every situation. I enjoyed watching this couple grow together. One of the beautiful parts of this story is witnessing Jess giving her life to Jesus. It was a touching and pure moment that brought me to tears.
When we get to the second half of the story it is several years later. Much has changed for Jess and Bryan so readers will have to experience what has transpired in those two years on their own. I don’t want to spoil one moment of their journey. The story does take on a serious note as Bryan seems to be dealing with something that he hasn’t shared with Jess. When Bryan does finally open up, the compassion that Jess shows is an illustration of a strong marriage grounded on faith.
The author totally shocked me as something so shattering happened in the story. I was not prepared for it at all and felt my heart skip a beat. This part is hard to write about. Without giving anything away, God will be the only one to help in this situation. How can this be happening and why?
I like how the author transitions by moving forward a few years, stopping to give us glimpses of characters and what happens to them. We then move forward and are surprised again when we catch up with Jess. Her drive to never turn away from her faith keeps her grounded as she makes decisions about her future. I’m thankful that I read this beautiful story and how the author shows brokenness and redemption through characters who experience trials.
“No matter how hard life got, there would always be something beautiful on the other side.”
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
Jess Hayley is a woman who has a talent that is able to read people by their micro expressions and body language. I just finished a TV series called Lie to Me that the main character had a similar ability. It was interesting and this book intrigued me greatly. I felt for Jess as she seemed to be alone. Her mother passed away, her father left when she was young, and due to her ability, she had a hard time connecting with others. Sometimes the connection was just too painful even. Except for her roommate, Stacy.
One night while out with Stacy to meet her new boyfriend, she meets Bryan. A man who she feels safe with. That night is the beginning of changes for Jess that she will carry for the rest of her life. They have a whirlwind romance, and their relationship progresses quickly. However, after a few years of marital bliss, Bryan stumbles across something at work that has been changing him and Jess wants to get to the bottom of it. She wants to work on their marriage.
There is so much that happens in this story. A lot. I will warn you, that there is something that happens, a plot, that I am not too overly fond of. I cannot say anything more, as it would be too big of a spoiler. Just be prepared for a crazy emotional roller coaster ride. This story about a unique woman with a unique ability, will be stepping out of her comfort zone for the sake of her family.
The story was emotional with a bit of romance, mystery, and suspense in a unique combination.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
No Matter What by Jennifer Carr is a Christian Romantic Suspense novel. Imagine you feel things deeply, and just by touching someone one time, sparks fly between you. When Jess Hayley, with her exceptional skill of deciphering people’s thoughts and emotions through body language and microexpressions, encounters Bryan Carsen, a U.S. Army Cyber Force member, she finds herself on an unforeseen path that challenges her beliefs and abilities.
The two meet, fall in love, and even marry all within a few weeks. After the birth of their first daughter, Bryan begins acting strangely, and from there, Jess and their daughter’s lives will change forever. The author builds the plot and characters incredibly, so you want to keep reading. Faith in God plays a major role in this story, and I love how the storyline plays out.
I will say that this book and the bonus epilogue available build on each other beautifully. I definitely recommend reading them both. Moreover, I must say I can not wait to read the second book in the series. From college roommates to a preacher and his wife to other friends they encounter along the way, this book provides the perfect afternoon escape with a heap of suspense built into it as well.
So, if you enjoy Christian Romantic Suspense novels, check out No Matter What by Jennifer Carr for yourself. I definitely recommend it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
This is an inspirational book but it is also a love story and a second chance for love. There is heartbreak and joy in this book. There is also life truths if we took them to heart. I will share them as part of the review. This book is a clean read but it does how moments that I felt like it could turn not so clean but I am happy to say it doesn’t. This story deals with death and sorrow but it is all part of life and makes this book so “real life”.
“I say weeping may come for the night, but joy comes in the morning, but joy is a funny thing you know? You can have joy and be sad. You can be sad and have joy. It is not a feeling it is a place where pain and purpose, bump their heads into each other. And the one you choose is the one that wins. Joy is a choice? Sometimes it is one you must make every day. “
“Your life jacket is Jesus. He can never be taken off or lost.”…….. “ But I am here to tell you that if you are wearing that life jacket, you will not drown. The Lord tells you, and he tells me in Isaiah chapter 43, verse 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they should not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you should not be burned, and the flame should not consume you.” He did not say there would be no water or fire. He said when there is, He is there and you will live. If He says that he will take you through, that means there is another side where there is no water.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.
“No Matter What” is a beautiful, evocative, and meaningful Christian novel that blends elements of romance, grief, second chances, and faith. The story revolves around Jess and Bryan, whose paths to love and self-discovery unfold with unexpected twists. They reveal so much personal growth as they explore their relationship and spiritual journeys.
I enjoyed Jess’s special gift of reading emotions and easily connected with her as she navigated the challenges of love and loss. With unexpected plot twists and strong pulls at my heartstrings, this story of the transformative power of love and faith kept me fully absorbed.
This is a touching and inspiring read that leaves a lasting impression. I look forward to reading the next in the series.
First Line: The knock at the door pulled my focus from the pages I was reading. Series: No Matter What, book 1 Genre: Christian Mystery/Suspense Author: Jennifer Carr Page Count: 358
#CoverLoverBookReview received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions are 100% mine.
I'm impressed with this story and how easily it flows completely from beginning to end! I'm not sure, but I think this is Carr's first book to write!? Carr definitely has talent and can draw the reader into the story. The characters are easy to picture in my mind and also easy to like. The main character has a unique medical ability that helps her to read a person's character or mood almost instantly as she meets them. This ability can be good and bad for her. Read this book and find out how she meets her future husband and about their life together. I like to help promote clean romance novels.
Normally not a genre I read but I took a gamble with this one and not only was the writing fantastic but the story hooked drew me in. Definitely recommend for anyone to pick up for an afternoon read.
I'm so happy I had the opportunity to read this book. My husband passed away a few months ago and I could relate to the pain ,suffering and guilt . I highly recommend it to you. It's clean and faith based .
I have really come to enjoy Christian Romance Suspense books over the past couple of years. No Matter What by Jennifer Carr is the latest in this genre that I have read.
Jess Hayley has become a valuable asset to the Government Agencies she consults as she is able to discern people and read their body emotions and thoughts. Life is flipped upside down she Jess meets Bryan Carsen, a member of the U.S. Army Cyber Force. Jess and Bryan are forced into a Road Trip and this is when they discover they are falling in love with each other. They also encounter many challenges and mishaps during this roadtrip, but Jess clings to hope and faith that God will work out the situations. They are both looking toward the future especially concerning their careers. Will Jess and Bryan survive the challenging Roadtrip? Will there be a relationship and future for the pair?
I will say that the first few pages of the book had me a little confused to the storyline. I quickly figured it out before the end of the first chapter and then there was no stopping in reading this book. I really LOVE how Jess has the discernment to read peoples emotions and body languages. She is not only an asset to her job but others in the community. Bryan is an amazing Character for the book and I LOVE the connection between Bryan and Jess. Jess and Bryan handle a serious sitauation with an evidence box together even when Jess is feeling betrayed. I can honestly say this book is an easy and fast read. There are many twists and turns in the storyline that really keep the readers interest peaked! I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Chrsitian Romance with Suspense. AMAZING BOOK!
This is a touching romance novel. It explores the love at first sight phenomenon and a romance developing intensely and very quickly. A focus is put on the struggle with tempting thoughts and remaining abstinent until marriage. There is a bit of suspense but the danger disappears quickly.
Other issues are covered in the novel, such as Christians helping each other when in need and the problem of marrying an unbeliever. There is a good faith message and a clear presentation of the gospel. I like to learn something when I read fiction and in this case is was the skill of reading others based on body language and a developed intuition.
Carr's writing style is clear and easy to read. The characters were well developed. The story is told from three first person viewpoints. Each viewpoint was clearly identified at the beginning of the chapter but I do find that technique of telling the story a bit distracting.
I am invested in the characters in this novel and look forward to their continued lives in a sequel.
No Matter What is an interesting novel that will keep you reading to see what comes next! I loved getting to know the characters. They definitely kept me intrigued and wondering what was going to happen next.
I loved that Jess seemed to have a gift for reading people. Of being able to tell whether they were being truthful or had an ulterior motive. But what if she read someone wrong? Could she get over that and trust herself again?
Add in a new character for her to befriend and work with. Can they figure out what’s going on?
This is one of those books that you need to read slowly as there is so much packed into the pages! But you also can’t stop reading because you have to know what happens next and you just can’t leave it for later!
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
No Matter What is the first book I have read by Jennifer Carr. I will definitely be reading more releases from her. It is, also, the start to the series by the same name. What an exciting start it is. I loved reading this story between Jess and Bryan. The two become a great team as they take this adventure with a lot of twists and turns that kept me engaged all throughout. No Matter What will be getting a very well deserved five plus stars from me. I highly recommend it for readers who love to read clean romantic suspense. I am looking forward to reading the next book from the No Matter What series, The Lost and Found. I received a paperback copy of Jennifer Carr’s No Matter What from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
This is a great book. I love the combination of romance and suspense. It is NOT your typical Christian romance novel. This author is not afraid to break out of the mold. I could hardly believe some of the twists and turns, and I couldn’t stop reading to find out what would happen next.
The overall story kept me engaged, but the end left me hanging with what happens with the ‘operation’ they were working on. It was great to see how her relationships unfold, but a little off to be so similar with events.
No Matter What by Jennifer Carr has got me gushing. The main character, Jess, has a gift: she can read the emotions of others with remarkable accuracy. It’s never explained if this is a well-honed sense of empathy or whether it’s some kind of supernatural gift, and it doesn’t matter. It’s a fascinating concept, and one I can’t remember reading before (which is always a great start).
It’s not perfect. The cover is underwhelming, I’m not a fan of whine or growl to describe the way characters speak, and there were aspects to the plot which broke all the “rules”. It also involves something close to the “love at first sight” trope, which is not one I usually enjoy.
Having said that (and without wanting to give any spoilers), part of what kept me engaged was the unexpected—the aspects which broke all the rules.
Jess is a fascinating character. Her “gift” is even more pronounced when she touches people, so she likes to keep physical contact to a minimum. As a result, she’s never had a proper boyfriend … something her roommate, Stacy, wants to change. She’s intelligent—as the story opens, she’s teaching college-level psychology and about to defend her PhD thesis.
The novel is written in first person, mostly from Jess’s point of view. I think this is a definite strength, although I know some readers struggle with first person. I love it, because it allows the reader to get inside the character’s head. With Jess, this means we get first-hand insight into her gift as she meets and reacts to new people.
This gift and the compelling yet believable way it is portrayed dragged me straight into the plot and didn’t let go. I was totally on board with the instant attraction between Jess and Bryan, even when I realised Jess wasn’t a Christian and the two were therefore unequally yoked.
However, that paved the way for something I’d love to see more of in Christian fiction—a believable come-to-Jesus conversion scene for an adult main character. Yes, I know they’re hard to write, so I do love it when an author achieves the almost-impossible and brings a Christian and a non-Christian together in a way that rings true.
I also loved the fact that Jess was clearly then discipled as a Christian by her pastor’s wife. No, we didn’t see this on the page (this is romantic suspense fiction, not how-to-disciple-a-new-believer nonfiction), but it was clearly part of her character journey.
And at the end, that’s what No Matter What was about. Yes, there are suspense elements and there are some puzzles to solve, but that’s not the core of the story. The core of the story is about character change: how the author shows characters change as they come to know Jesus, with the unwritten implication that He can do the same for us.
Because He loves us. No matter what. And, despite what some might see as many faults, that’s why I’m left gushing about No Matter What.
Thanks to Jennifer Carr for providing a free ebook for review.
It's weird leaving a review for my own book but I wanted to add one from my perspective.
I loved writing this book. There were days that words poured out of me as though a dam had broken. Other days I stared at the screen until my eyes felt crossed and only touched the keyboard to text my husband how absolutely uninspired I was.
The day before I clicked PUBLISH, I reread the entire book cover-to-cover, word-for word and just as I had the first time through, I smiled, I cried, my heart swelled, and it shattered into pieces.
This book follows the story of Jess Hayley, a woman who was born with the gift of "reading people" through their body language and microexpressions (facial expressions not typically visible to the untrained eye). She spends her adult life sharpening, honing, and strengthening this ability alongside her professor and colleague Dr. Derick Thorne.
At a nightclub owned by her roommate's boyfriend, Jess is introduced to Bryan Carsen, a member of the U.S. Army Cyber Force. This encounter ultimately changes her life and is the first in a series of events that leaves Jess questioning everything she thought she believed.
When an unexpected roadtrip pushes Jess and Bryan together, the two find themselves not only on a rescue mission but on a journey rife with love and loss. Through it all, Jess is forced to find and cling to hope that even the biggest of life's challenges can bring about a beautiful redemption.
As Bryan and Jess figure out what the future looks like for the two of them, they are each presented with choices concerning their own careers. While working on a classified project at work, Bryan stumbles upon nefarious activity that takes him down the path of covert investigations. Jess is given the opportunity to work alongside the FBI before eventually branching out on her own as a consultant for numerous government agencies.
Jess finds herself the recipient of a mysterious box of evidence related to Bryan’s investigation and that is when she knows everything she holds dear is about to be threatened. She turns to the only person she knows she can trust but she wonders if she can trust her heart in the process.
It's so hard for me to stop here because, if I may confess, Part III is my absolute favorite part of the story. It was my favorite part to write and it's my favorite part to read. But if I were to tell you more, I'd spoil the ending and there's nothing worse than a massive spoiler like revealing the ending of a book. So, this is where my personal review and summary of No Matter What ends.
I hope this encourages you to pick it up and find out for yourself why Part III is my favorite part of the book. I look forward to hearing and reading your reviews.
