Well, here we are. We’ve done a lot of quests, killed a lot of creatures, saved the world a few times, and even got the girl. But now? Now playtime is over. The game maker has made his final move, and he’s pitting me not only against the creatures of Earth, but the creatures of the cosmos. That’s right, it’s time for a battle royale. But even as I fight for not just D.C. but the world, I can’t help but remember who the real enemy is. Sometimes, you just have to wake up and fight God… or at least a god. It’s endgame, and I don’t intend to be the one who dies.
While I enjoyed the story and characters in it, I couldn't help getting irritated at a couple issues that seemed to plague the whole series. The most annoying thing was the author's seeming cluelessness when it came to simple North American geography. A short Google search would have made this a much better read. The other issue I had was the lack of robust game mechanics in a story about a world turned into a giant game. Though the author mentioned quite a few different games, it didn't seem like he'd done more than read a description on the back of a game box or wiki page, and never played most of them.
Writing this as a review of the entire series. I'm a huge fan of the first 3 books in this series. Great characters, post-apocalyptic world building, discovering new people, laugh out loud funny, even some romance and good action/combat sequences that aren't overdone angst fights. The 4th book still has some humor but abandons the rest and leans heavily on the combat. It also ends abruptly not much post mortem after the big fight. Still highly recommend this series.
Finally got round to reading this book as didn't get the original notification of its release. It's been a great series ending could of been better as it kinda geeks like it just ended without and closure.
