My Poison Princess Is Still Cute, Vol. 2

So, there’s this demon princess who emits poison that kills people and she’s married to a prince who can reincarnate constantly so that becomes less of an issue. And didn’t we do this last time around?
Moreso than any other type of manga, I think 4-koma live or die on the basis of their second volume, where it becomes clear if the premise has any sort of legs going forward or all the jokes got exhausted in the first volume.
Which leads to my observation that there might not be much gas left in the tank on this one; it certainly has a couple of moments, but it’s not the next Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun or Tsuredure Children. Looks like somebody might agree, since the third volume will be the series’ finale.
Most of the comedy involves Raffy and Loren being incredibly bashful and then sometimes not as much. They care for one another quite a bit and occasionally it shines through. The end.
You can only make so many jokes about how slow the progress is before you blink and point out that the author’s got control of that, no matter what they might say. You don’t need to use anybody else as audience surrogates, just do something!
Some of it is fine. The tea party that is awkward as all get out because Raffy and Loren don’t actually know how to talk to one another is early enough that its woeful awkwardness is kind of fun and it introduces Raffy’s amusing tendency to wax poetic about her interests if given half a chance.
Later on, Raffy gets kidnapped by a trio of tough slimes who are sick and tired of being the weak starting monsters for people to beat up on. Yes, it’s a clear dig at Dragon Quest and a little late, but it’s a decent enough digression.
Part of this volume’s problem is that it adds in Loren’s old master, Adelie, who doesn’t add pretty much anything to the story since she just ends up conspiring with Raffy’s servants and… they do that well enough on their own.
I appreciate that Adelie doesn’t turn out to be an impossibly proportioned manga stereotype who’s secretly crushing on Loren, she’s even happily married, but the simple fact is that she’s not actually funny. The whole trap thing (minus a possible Frieren homage) gets old fast and then… she’s just there.
It’s too bad. I get that this is trying and the little relationship moments between Loren and Raffy are, in fact, titularly cute. But it doesn’t make me laugh enough and doesn’t have enough meat on the bone to land punchlines consistently.
3 stars - I feel like I’m being generous with that score, but this series has its heart in the right place. And the few moments where it showcases that are nice enough. I’ll see it through to the last volume, but there’s that rule of threes again…

Ah, my favourite awkward couple! This was just the cutest, especially when his master appeared and was more than eager to get him to get closer to his waifu. And the art! So adorable!

3.5★ because I do still think this premise is very cute. there was just not enough progress here to keep me invested! I kept putting it down because it's just the same joke over and over. even so, the art is still great and the addition of loren's mentor (and her loving, strong, and silent husband) helped keep things moving.

Still cute, but the joke is getting a little stale. I hope there’s more progression in their relationship in the next volume.
