Quite different from a lot of romances I've read. The book is definetely heavy on the romance, but also touches on tough topics like natural disasters and domestic abuse.

I really liked the character of Keane Temple. He struggled with human temptations but always prayed for the Lord to help guide him. I really admired his strength and kindness. I also liked Ami, and how she was genuinely curious to know about Keane's faith and drove him to success. I loved the martial arts aspect, it was very unique and not seen in much fiction. The faith content was done pretty well too.

Overall it was a well written book, the last half of the book I couldn't put down and binge read to the last page. As I said a little heavy on the romance side of things but enjoyed the story and characters.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

A romance heavily equipped with faith. There are many topics that are touched on in this story. All of them will have you in the feels. This book was touching, heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time! The couple this book focuses on really goes through a lot together. I liked the characters and I like the flow of the story!

Keane Temple know as "The Golden Lion," arrives in Japan with one singular focus--to become a world champion prizefighter and defeat Nico Mori. From humble beginnings as an orphaned child, Keane has worked tirelessly complete his fight and finish the race (2 Timothy 4:6-8.) When he meets Ami, they are drawn to each other instantly. Ami Mori, a beautiful, brilliant phD student, captivates Keane. When it is revealed that she from the same Japanese dynasty and tycoon family as her prideful and cocky brother, Nico Mori, Keane angrily decides he cannot continue to see Ami.

But, these two have a natural, mutual attraction that sizzles.

When Oceans Roar is part sports romance, part forbidden love. The prose and setting in Japan is absolutely breathtaking. For whatever reason, I have read very sparingly within Christian Contemporary Romance. This was gorgeous, fun. And, it is a book you can recommend to anyone.

This book was phenomenal!!! When I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about reading it. When I finally started back last night, I couldn’t quit reading it until I was done!!! Like a modern day Francine Rivers. This book will speak to anyone from younger girls to older women…

MMC- American fighter with a dark past. He believes in God and isn’t afraid to let that be known, even in Japan.

FMC- Japanese woman with a controlling father & 6 brothers.

💫 They meet randomly in a train station… and the book takes off from there.
💫 The book keeps you engaged the whole time! Something is happening throughout the whole book!

A feel good story with SO MUCH depth to the plot! So much feeling in this book!!!

I find the theme of forbidden love intriguing. The story kicks off in Japan, where American boxer Keane Temple unexpectedly meets Japanese grad student Ami Ono. Keane is in Japan to compete for the World Champion Prizefighter title, while Ami crosses paths with him upon his arrival already knowing who he is.

The author skillfully presents the compelling chemistry between the characters, which kept me mesmerized. In any new relationship, there are hidden secrets, and Ami holds a significant one – she is actually the younger sister of Keane's upcoming championship opponent, cocky and rich Niko Ono.

The story's depiction of Japanese culture, both ancient and modern, was beautifully shown in vivid imagery in my mind. The dynamics within the Ono family comprised of six boys and Ami, are intense. Ami is challenging tradition with her career and choice of partner, and Keane wrestles with his tragic past and a promise he needs to fulfill to his dead mother.

Through tested faith and struggles, Keane and Ami learn to trust and love each other. The wholesome romance illustrates a courtship brimming with tenderness and passion, along with great adversity and a devastating natural disaster.

To find out if 'The Ocean Roars' finishes with a happy ending, you'll need to read this captivating story for yourself.

I enjoyed traveling to Japan in this story and getting a small taste of the culture, as well as a glimpse into the world of a professional prizefighter. I enjoyed getting the know the characters, with their strengths and weaknesses. Ami was an especially interesting character, with being caught between two worlds, the world of her family and the name she is making for herself. I also enjoyed that there is a side character that seems to get their happily ever after. I liked the message of this story. I only wish it were a little bit longer!

This was an interesting, quick Christian romance set in Japan! A forbidden love between a karate fighter and the sister of his upcoming opponent. The sister, already promised to another. It was a sweet story, with some unexpected drama and surprises kept me engaged. Their love was quick, but not without drama. I appreciated seeing how they stood by each other through everything. Though I wish some elements were explored more (her betrothed seemed pretty low-key about their relationship which was curious to me), I enjoyed the overall story!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, received from the author. However, all thoughts and views reflected are strictly my own opinions.

As a debut novel I thought this was pretty good. It took me a few chapters to get into it but once I did I found the story interesting. The story is set in Japan and the author definitely paints a beautiful picturesque photo for your mind with all of her descriptions. The main character Keane meets Ami and immediately feels a pull towards her, not knowing that she is hiding something. I felt like when he finds out who she is was a bit less dramatic than I was picturing on my mind but it did bring tension to the story.

There are themes of faith, resilience and hope. You do see the characters grow and the romance is very sweet between them. I really enjoyed how the author gave us a look at traditional Japanese culture along with the modern version of it.

Overall it was a good debut novel! If you are looking for a new read and author give this one a try!

This was an interesting story of a forbidden love meshed with instant attraction, where the old-world customs clashes with the new world of falling in love. It was also an interesting setting, against the backdrop of Japan in modern day, where a karate championship is about to take place.

Keane Temple has arrived in Japan to take the win. He is a karate championship, an interest that his mother instilled in him when he was little due to a turbulent and abusive home life situation. Keane is a great fighter, and his frame is widespread in Japan. Especially as he will be matched with one of their own top contenders.

While out and about, Keane meets an amazing woman, Ami Ono whom he has an instant connection with. She as well with him. Ami is the youngest and only daughter after six boys. She comes from a well to do family, but her life is not her own. Her father and brothers are a bit controlling. What is a girl to do? I also found her vocation as a vulcanologist very interesting too. What an intriguing career choice.

The title both drew me in and fit the story well. I enjoyed my visit to Japan, I hope to go someday for real, but this story brought the culture and land to life in my imagination well. A great old-fashion love story to boot, with some surprise and dangerous plot turns that kept me turning those pages.

I was provided a copy of this novel by the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

3.5 stars rounded up.

When the Ocean Roars is the debut novel of Charlsie Estess, set in present-day Japan with a romance-forward plot. Keane, the hero, is an American mixed martial arts athlete who's in Japan for a world champion match against native son Niko Ono. By chance, Keane meets Ami, a Japanese science researcher, and the attraction between them is immediate and strong.

But of course external factors challenge their relationship. Can Keane maintain focus and his intense training schedule to prepare for the championship? Will Ami defy her dominating father and brothers to pursue a relationship with man of her choosing? The "third act conflict" went in a direction I didn't expect (and explains the title) which had me quickly turning the pages. In bookish serendipity, the same event was featured in the novel I read just before this one.

It was a change of pace to read a romance that focuses on physical attraction; the novel contains many descriptions of Keane and Ami's physical appearance and their high-end wardrobes. Yet both main characters have experienced grief and regrets that impact their personalities and choices. Keane's career is very successful, and it was interesting to read about the lavish tactics he takes to avoid the paparazzi and public interest in his relationship with Ami. I'd classify this as a clean romance with a light thread of Christian faith.

Thank you to the author for a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions are my own.

Oh, what a tangled web we weave.

Ami doesn't really *plan* to deceive MMA fighter Keane Temple when she "meets" him at the metro station. But she is so ready, for a few moments, to step away from her father's and brother's excessively high standards for her life. And their demands. Keane is just wanting to do a little sightseeing in beautiful Japan. And the exquisite, charming, and clearly brilliant Ami offers to take him around. Just as a measure of hospitality to her country, of course. But that little deception that she didn't really mean to engage in? It's going to come back to haunt them both. And the budding relationship that could have been? They should cut that off.

But ending things before they began isn't so easy. When circumstances keep throwing Ami and Keane together, the two can't step away from the romantic sparks between them. Despite the family dramas, behind-the-scenes games, and even, perhaps, danger before them.

This beautiful, clean, romantic story has so much to draw your attention! Keane's character and Christian faith are so appealing...even as Ami's life challenges and fierce personal strength make us not only want to find out more, but to hope for a relationship between the two. Wonderful read--definitely 5 stars!

When the Ocean Roars is a wonderful book that encompasses two separate cultures and two different people in Japan. I enjoyed reading this novel. The characters were wonderful. They each had struggles and things to overcome. Part of the appeal of this novel to me was that I got to travel to Japan while reading it!

The descriptions were so nice and really made me feel like I was there. I also had to do some research because I was intrigued by what I was reading. The characters had to do some growth and figure out who they were and what was important to them.

I’ve never really enjoyed watching boxing or prizefighting so learning about Keane and what he does was interesting for me. Ami is unique in her own way as well. She’s caught between tradition and what she wants to be/do.

Contempory Christian Romance is a favorite Genre of mine. When the Ocean Roars by Charlsie Estes is a debut novel and I recently had the opportunity to read it.

WOW, there is so much to LOVE about this book. I was captivated by the storyline from the first chapter and could barely put it down. The 2 main characters in the book, Keane Temple and Ami Ono, met while Keane is in Japan for a Prize Fighting competition. I really LOVE how Keane is easily distracted by Ami once they meet and immediately wants to spend time with her. Ami is hiding her true identity from Keane. There is a lot of drama when Keane discovers who Ami really is and their time together comes to an abrupt end. I really see God working in both of them especially when things happen that forces them to spend time together again. The book is one of Forbidden LOVE, Faith and reconciliation. I really LOVE that Keane and Ami follow God's lead for them and not the fact that they had to overcome so many things to be together. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Romance! GREAT BOOK!!

Estess's debut novel is a knockout!

In "When the Ocean Roars," Charlsie Estess delivers a captivating debut that combines forbidden love, faith, and dramatic twists.

The story of Keane Temple and Ami Ono, set in Japan, is a heartwarming journey of discovery and resilience. Estess excels in creating immersive scenes and complex characters that resonate deeply with me even now. The themes of faith, resilience, and hope are beautifully woven into the narrative, offering a profound message alongside a delightful romance. This novel is a perfect escape and a testament to love's enduring power.

This novel is a perfect read—engaging, easy to follow, and filled with profound messages of love and faith. It is a highly recommended read for anyone who enjoys contemporary Christian romance.

This was an interesting read. I liked the forbidden love aspect, and the world of fighting. I also liked that there was a lot going on, even a tsunami -but I wished Ami's geology research was explained more and made a bigger part of the story (I expected that with the tsunami, but it was brushed over). I also would have liked better character development for the minor characters. Ami and Keane were written well, but everyone else was pretty flat, so I didn't feel as much tension with her family as I probably should have. I also would have liked more in the ending (something with her studying in the states, like she'd wanted to?). But it was still a nice, quick read, with heartfelt faith elements and a unique storyline.

Content: some (competitive fighting) violence, references to domestic abuse (not graphic), mild innuendo.

I thought this was a good book and I liked seeing the contrast between those who had faith and those who did not. I liked seeing how their faith or lack of it motivated them and effected their actions. I also liked seeing some of the Japanese culture. I thought that was very interesting. I also liked the romance between Ami and Keane. Although their romance was fast, I liked how he respected her and loved her and showed her what real love was. I liked the Christian themes in this book because I think it added to the story and the characters. I think it helped us to see that even when bad things happen, there is still good in the world if we look for it. Overall, I enjoyed this story and the characters and would recommend it.

I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors.  A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.

When the Ocean Roars is one of the most unusual Contemporary Christian Romances I've read in quite some time. From the setting to the hero's and heroine's occupations, this book delivers on originality. The instant-attraction romance is front and center, and has some spice. But I loved that the hero considers the consequences of a physical relationship outside of marriage, both to the woman he's falling for, and his faith.

Kimberly's Rating System:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ = I really, really liked the book. Maybe even loved it. 😍
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ = I liked the book. Would recommend it to others who enjoy the same genre.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ = The book was just o.k. for me. I finished it.
I don't post a rating on a book that I can't at least give three stars (chances are I didn't even finish it and, therefore, cannot give a worthwhile opinion).

This book took me by surprise but in the very best way. It felt like a slow burn romance—even though there were stolen kisses and touches throughout—simply because the romance was forbidden. You can’t date the guy your brother is going to fight. And certainly not when your father has arranged for you to marry someone else.

I LOVED the writing. I ADORED the chemistry between Ami and Keane. I was anxious to see how it would all work out, and ultimately I enjoyed the ending.

This book does have Christian themes, which is just something to note if you like to read those or if you’re on the other end and avoid them. I loved this one though. I felt like my faith was lifted, and I really enjoyed the romance. It was such a feel good story and I was rooting for Ami and Keane the entire time!

A few things about me I love Jesus and I love a good UFC fight. When I seen this book had both of those themes in it... I knew this one would absolutely be for me.
I loved it! A blazing ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫4.5/5 stars for me. It was a forbidden romance, with action, faith, family and family drama. I loved the MMC Keane and his unwavering faith. The FMC Ami is from Japan where the setting of book takes place. Ami is actually the sister of the guy Keane is supposed to fight for the championship.

I absolutely loved the way Charlie Estess writes, it was engaging and written in a way that it was easy to follow and one I was unable to put down. If you enjoy
contemporary romance and books involving Christian faith, this is one you will definitely want to pick up.

This story of forbidden love, set in Asia, based in faith and will have you flipping pages immediately. I truly enjoyed how immersed I immediately felt in the setting, I was able to see myself sitting on the sidelines, watching the book unfold in my mind, picturing each character vividly. The author did such a great job of setting each scene, building the story and throwing a curve ball in that you are not at all expecting! This is a perfect beach read! Not too spicy, easy to read and perfect enjoy while enjoying a beverage around the pool! This is a don’t miss for the summer 2024! I can’t wait for her next book to drop!

I have to say, when I started this book I was not expecting to enjoy a fighter’s story the way that I have enjoyed diving into the life of Keane Temple. The cultural setting of Japan was rich with description. Containing everything from fighting to a tsunami, this book drew me in to a world that is foreign to me and gave me the opportunity to see it through the author’s eyes. Faith is intertwined in every aspect which is a refreshing twist. If you like a clean, wholesome read, this is for you!

The characters are strong and intelligent while also sporting a high emotional IQ. A modern twist on Romeo and Juliet has this couple up against everything from family, health, and weather as they fight for a chance at the freedom to be together. The author has a way of drawing you in to this love story by painting a detailed but delicate courtship that will leave the reader with all the pleasure of a good romance, and none of the guilt!

Charlsie Estess offers a vibrant voice in the contemporary landscape, one you don't want to miss. Her debut novel is filled with action, romance, faith, family, and forbidden love. I enjoyed Keane Temple and Ami Ono's romance and commitment to each other. They have to fight for their relationship despite different cultures and worlds. I loved how God worked in both of them to grow as individuals and toward one another. I could not put this book down. Such an amazing read.

I loved this story so much. Charlsie Estess is a talented writer and really brings the story to life with action driven character development and setting. I started reading it poolside and didn’t want to put down late into the night.
The voice of this novel gives a realistic picture of what it means to follow God and have relationships with real people. To expect His promises and help and also experience hardship. A million star review- if i could give them all I would.

I could not put this book down! I rarely read romance, know nothing about the world of martial arts, and have never visited Japan. The setting within the martial arts world was unique and intriguing, I felt like I was visiting Japan, and the romance was enhanced by truly authentic characters with real struggles with faith, family, and forging a future together. I cannot wait for the sequel, and this will be on my Christmas gift list.

The main characters only talked about three topics the whole book. The storyline itself was interesting but the characters were the most one dimensional I have seen in a long time. Would love to see more interesting storylines from this author, but hopefully with characters(main included) with actual personalities not revolving the main characters’ attraction towards each other.
