Charles Coe has been able to take his tour of Vietnam and pick out the events that seem to have had the most effect on him during that time. Although, I'm sure there were other events in his tour that struck a cord, that were not included here.
He has managed to take those events and condense them and the feelings they create into short chapters. There isn't any way to read this and not be able to understand how he felt.
This is a great book for at least middle school kids to read to better understand an individual's experience in a war. There aren't many war books that come to mind that are written to a level of understanding for them. I don't remember having anything like this in school. I wish I had found it in the library.
I bought this book from a sale in our local bookstore, and let me just tell you, I am lucky to have been able to read something as beautiful and heart wrenching as this book is.
The narration used here is a niche of mine. I love any usage of second person POV since it helps me connect more with the story and the main character, but I can understand if some people might find it unappealing. Still, do give it a try. The imagery used in this book is very vivid and harrowing, and you'll definitely feel the experience and chaos it took to write about war and loss in such a cutthroat yet accepting way.
I read this book for the first time in middle school. It sparked a love for War novels and brought out a passion for humans rights for me. It shows the human side of war, not just the numbers. It is written amazing and shows you the journey of this young man and his quest to get home.
