John Kese was living a normal life as a 15-year-old in Bedford County, Virginia, right at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. He was just finishing up his freshman year in high school and looking forward to a summer of fishing, friends and baseball. He played for the local high school, as well as a travel team in Richmond.
He loved being with his family including his parents, his older and younger sisters along with his younger brother. Both sets of his grandparents lived within a mile of him and provided him with an extended family not quite the norm as was once known.
It was May, 2013, when John was diagnosed with Arnold Chiari Malformation. It was then that he, his family, and his entire community would venture together on a 15-month journey to return to the life he had once a life of fishing, friends and baseball.
