Aurielle

Napoleon’s wars had stolen her past, but she alone would win her future --- as the lady she was born to be!

"She must never forget her mother is of the nobility..."

Only the yellowed scrap of paper bearing these words told Aurielle of her heritage. The note and the jeweled dagger she now tucked at her waist were the only legacy from the dying man who'd left her at the inn when she was four. They were enough --- with her own beauty and spirit --- to set Aurielle planning.

She would escape to America, conquer men with her charm and society with her skill. All scullery wenches have such dreams, but she was "of the nobility." She would make them all come true.

Abandoned, pg 60-ish. There’s nothing wrong on a technical level—I’ve read this author before & rated it highly. I don’t even think it’s a bad story, per se…I just really dislike these tropes (War of 1812, privateers/pirates, sailing, Colonial era) & have no interest in pushing onward. The blurb is vague & unhelpful; if I’d known these were the fulcrums, I’d not have bothered getting it. *shrug*

So, as I said. Not for me. Too bad, really…first-person narration is unusual in bodice rippers, & that’s a trope I DO enjoy, but not even first-person voice can get me interested in this particular plot. 😴 Nope. Moving on.

It was just smut. Which was fine. I needed some entertainment one night and I didn't want to think too hard.
