I enjoyed this paperback when it came out in 2007, and just re-read it in eBook form. Author Michael Fleeman does his usual fine job, and the setting (the bodybuilding world) is one you don't often encounter in true crime books.
A thrift store had a copy of Killer Bodies. I’d never heard of the case, but the book was cheap and I love true crime. So, I took a chance and I’m glad that I did.
The book concerns husband and wife bodybuilders Craig Titus and Kelly Ryan. They were a glamour couple in the world of bodybuilding and attracted much attention due to their looks. But, in December 2005, a woman lived with them (Melissa James) was found dead in Ryan’s burning Jaguar in the Nevada desert.
This book ends before the end of the legal case. Otherwise, it’s a terrific read. You learn about the strange subculture of big-time bodybuilding and about an interesting criminal case.
I read this long enough ago that I can't remember any details which seems to be happening more and more lately, especially with true crime books. I don't remember liking this or hating it but I do know that I have respect for Michael Fleeman. I've read a few of his others and have still others on my to-read list. He's definitely a prominent author in the true crime genre and I'd most definitely suggest any true crime read at least something by him, if not this. If I knew off the top of my head what others he's written that I've read I could give a recommendation but I can't do that right now. Fleeman is an author not to miss.
This book does a great job of showing the degree of dirtiness the main characters had reached, causing their fall from grace and into the worlds of hard drugs and murder.
