The author has provided an unmatched amount of diplomatic source documentation from the 1930’s to prove his premise- that official Soviet Union policy was to attempt to form a pact with the non-fascist countries to encircle Nazi Germany and prevent its expansion. The book can be dry, and there are many names that can be difficult to track, but I’ve never seen the actual course of diplomatic events that led to the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact laid out so clearly. Worth the read for anyone who thinks they understand the political climate of Europe in the 1930’s.
This is a must read for anyone interested in Soviet history. The work dispenses with Baltic and Polish nationalist mythology about the origins of WW2 for good.
