A Holiday Away by Jess Gardner is such a good read that I devoured it in one sitting!
It tells the story of Jane, an incredibly real, funny, intelligent woman who I would absolutely love to hang out with in real life. She takes an extended trip to Scotland to check something off her bucket list, but also to help herself get over the sudden ending of a 7 year relationship with her high school sweetheart.
Almost immediately Jane meets Leo, the impossibly handsome co-owner of her rental, and is quickly embraced by Leo’s entire eclectic friend group. The story follows Jane as she explores Scotland, begins to heal her heart, forges new friendships, and becomes closer to Leo.
First of all, Gardner’s descriptions of Scotland were all so lush I could feel as well as see all the places Jane was experiencing. Reading this will probably inspire a strong desire to journey to the Scottish Highlands.
The cast of characters is so lovable. As a massively socially awkward person, the kindness and welcoming nature of all of Leo’s friends sounds like an absolute dream come true. They quickly and thoroughly befriend her and make sure she has someone to share meals with and explore the country.
Several characters (Jane included) were laugh out loud funny and I loved the banter between not just her and Leo, but their friend Nina and basically everyone.
The romance between Jane and Leo is steamy but not salacious—if you are one of those people looking for another weird slightly uncomfortable euphemism for various body parts, this is not the book for you.
This entire book was the equivalent of sitting in front of a fireplace with a cozy quilt and a mug of hot cocoa while snow gently falls outside.
