I loved this short holiday story. It’s quite literally the story of my biggest dream!!!

After having her heart broken, Jane takes her life savings and flies to Scotland to spend Christmas writing and enjoying the Scottish country-side.

She meets Leo, who is the embodiment of every American girl’s Scottish fantasy. He’s sexy and successful, but also one of the most kind hearted book men I’ve ever read. I just love him.

They of course hit things off…after all it’s a Holiday romance. Leo is so respectful of her. Since she doesn’t know him well and especially after finding out that she’s newly single. Even so they are drawn to each other and Jane is welcomed warmly by his friends.

I loved their time together. There were times I was frustrated with her because Leo was very open and upfront about his feelings and she just couldn’t reciprocate. BUT she’s only been single for like two months & she’s never been with anyone other than Jake. I loved their chemistry and the development of their relationship! Which is where my love and respect for this book really comes in….

I totally recommend this heartwarming story! Made me swoon and dream of a life I’ll never have but can dream!

A Holiday Away by Jess Gardner is such a good read that I devoured it in one sitting!

It tells the story of Jane, an incredibly real, funny, intelligent woman who I would absolutely love to hang out with in real life. She takes an extended trip to Scotland to check something off her bucket list, but also to help herself get over the sudden ending of a 7 year relationship with her high school sweetheart.

Almost immediately Jane meets Leo, the impossibly handsome co-owner of her rental, and is quickly embraced by Leo’s entire eclectic friend group. The story follows Jane as she explores Scotland, begins to heal her heart, forges new friendships, and becomes closer to Leo.

First of all, Gardner’s descriptions of Scotland were all so lush I could feel as well as see all the places Jane was experiencing. Reading this will probably inspire a strong desire to journey to the Scottish Highlands.

The cast of characters is so lovable. As a massively socially awkward person, the kindness and welcoming nature of all of Leo’s friends sounds like an absolute dream come true. They quickly and thoroughly befriend her and make sure she has someone to share meals with and explore the country.

Several characters (Jane included) were laugh out loud funny and I loved the banter between not just her and Leo, but their friend Nina and basically everyone.

The romance between Jane and Leo is steamy but not salacious—if you are one of those people looking for another weird slightly uncomfortable euphemism for various body parts, this is not the book for you.

This entire book was the equivalent of sitting in front of a fireplace with a cozy quilt and a mug of hot cocoa while snow gently falls outside.

Anticipation: noun, a feeling of excitement about something pleasant that is going to happen. See also, A HOLIDAY AWAY by Jess Gardner.

Reading this book was like putting on a cozy sweater and propping my feet up by a gently crackling fire. The atmosphere was so cozy, so intimate, so vivid I could picture all the places where Jane went. I could smell the smoky fire and the sea air. I felt the cool rain and the tingle of goosebumps when Jane and Leo interacted. It was so beautifully immersive.

Jane is a character who I’d love to befriend. She seemed real. And can we talk about the slow-burn build up between Jane and Leo? I felt the chemistry between these two characters so strongly, it jumped off the page and wrapped me in the rush and excitement of new love. There is enough spice later to satisfy the smoldering flame that Jess really stoked throughout Jane and Leo’s interactions, too.

And lovely Leo… *chef’s kiss* I was initially drawn to this book when Leo was introduced as an emotionally intelligent love interest. There is nothing more attractive to me than a man who is strong enough, nay, perceptive enough, not to let his own desires override his partner’s. And even when he catches feelings, Leo is respectful enough to follow Jane’s lead.

I got such an ache when I finished this book. I wanted to open it up again and live there. So if you like travel, and new love, and the chance to experience the magic of the holiday season in rugged Scotland with an incredibly hunky Scots-book-boyfriend, you must give A HOLIDAY AWAY a try.

I was given the opportunity to read an advance review copy of this book for free. My review is honest and given voluntarily.

A Holiday Away by Jess Gardner is a Christmas romance set in a small town in Scotland. As someone who loves the winter months and has always wanted to visit Scotland, this book was perfect for me!

After a bad break-up, Jane makes the decision to spend Christmas is a rental cottage in Scotland, a place she always wanted to travel to. It is there that she meets Leo, the brother of her host. The spark between them is undeniable, but after her recent break-up, Jane doesn't know if she should risk getting hurt again.

Their romance was adorable and I absolutely loved Leo and Jane. Leo is everything I'm looking in a love interest: handsome, kindhearted and emotionally mature. All the characters were absolutely wonderful and made for a very friendly and cosy setting.

In the end I did actually feel sorry for Jane's ex-boyfriend, Jake, and I'm secretly hoping that we get a book about him because I think he was a good guy that deserves love as well.

Whilst I wouldn't say that this book needs a sequel (it works extremely well as a standalone) I would absolutely love to read about Jane's life in Scotland and how her relationship with Leo continues. I feel like they has a lot of unexplored potential so I would definitely be up to reading a second book.

Overall, A Holiday Away is a fantastic debut novel of romance and self discovery and its the perfect winter read!

❄🏡Good romance & personal growth story🏡

4.5🌟 stars
The Scotland setting first drew me to this novel by an author unknown to me. It turned out to be a great choice. Leo the male lead is scrumptious, a Scottish dreamboat very modest about his accomplishments and, rather unbelievably in American traveler Jane's eyes, interested in her from the moment she arrives on her three-week getaway to a small coastal town in southwest Scotland.

I found this a good bit of escapism; it took me to a dreamy world where all things can work out in the end if you're willing to open yourself to the possibilities and make them happen. Jane's intent on leaving her cares behind in Virginia and immediately encounters a circle of locals who quickly become friends, beautiful scenery, a handsome man ready to escort her about and a chance to rediscover what she wants from life after the abrupt end of her seven year relationship with her beau from high school. The romance builds gradually, with a few false starts, and when the heat finally ramps up it's not graphic.

Looks like I will definitely be looking for more by Jess Gardner.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

A sweet and lovely holiday romance by a new-to me author. Jane has had her heart broken and decides to leave for a while and go to Scotland to spend some time writing and just enjoy her surroundings. She's certainly not looking for love, but she meets Leo, who is the most kind-hearted, considerate man, and of course impossibly handsome, and she can't help the flutters in her heart. As her heart begins to heal, she and Leo begin to form a beautiful friendship, and the two begin to grow closer. The sparks that sizzle and fly between them are undeniable, but Jane is reluctant to take a risk on her heart again.
I really enjoyed this book. The author did a nice job of describing the scenery of the breathtaking Scottish country-side and bringing the story and the characters to life. I enjoyed seeing Jane and Leo's relationship grow, he was so kind and respectful of her doubts and feelings. The romance between the was sweet and heartwarming, and they made such an adorable couple. If you're looking for a nice escape and a story that will leave you with a warm and fuzzy feeling, then you definitely will want to pick this one up. Really delightful read!

𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘀: strangers to friends to lovers, he falls first, small town

This book is a short holiday love story, and it's so good!!

Jane has a broken heart and decides to go to Scotland to spend the Christmas writing and visiting. What she did not expect was that she found such a lovely and friendly group of people. And among them is Leo. He is very sexy and such kind hearted. He was so lovely and perfect for Jane.

Jane, not wanting any relationship, was reticent, but spending a lot of time together only made them develop feelings for each other. But the biggest problem is: how will they manage a possible long-distance relationship when Jane will need to return to America?

Ahh I want to tell you so much about it, but I feel like this book it's one that needs to be discovered by yourself and feel it.

Thank you Jess Gardner for the opportunity to read this amazing book in exchange for an honest review.

I was introduced to this author by a friend who was visiting Scotland, from Pennsylvania.

She knew I was an avid reader and specifically of the romance kind and thought this, a fitting gift.

I'm so glad she did!

I absolutely loved the writing style, was drawn to her little nuggets of humour and found myself invested from very early into the read.

It was a nice light hearted (cleaner than I'm used too lol) romance.

It wasn't deep or overly thought provoking, but then I don't think that's what the author was aiming for, with this one.

What it did bring was a good escape and a story you could immerse yourself in and get attached to their world, if only for a little while. I'm Scottish born and bred and even I wanted to be swept up in the fictional village of Cowan.

I will definitely be going on to check out some of Jess's other books.

Jane has always loved all things scottish. Now, after a break-up, she rents a small cottage on the scottish coast to spend december there. Once there she meets a whole group of new friends and of course: Leo. He could be a perfect holiday fling. But Jane has to figure out what she really wants first.

I enjoyed reading this book. I loved the setting in a small-town in Scottland. The main characters and their problems were very relatable but sometimes I felt that there was too much stop and go in the plot.

All in all an entertaining book for the holiday season.

Yes! What a great slow burn love story. I fell in love with all the characters. It’s an easy story… no extreme highs or extreme lows added to the plot for effect. It was a constant love story I wanted to continue turning the page on. 2 days… I couldn’t stop reading it. I love how Jane found her way & took chances for herself and not for someone else. And Leo, yes please! Loved him.

I need a book 2! I love this book! Thank you for sharing it with me!

This charming rom com is set in small town Scotland and works well as an easy low-angst read. Leo is gruff and interesting, Jane is burned out and escaping her real life. The setting is charming and we feel the pull of Scotland and this different life for Jane.

I'd love more tension between them, more of everything - more steam, more banter, more pining, it all feels a bit muted. That said, the story rolled along and I cared about them both and their HEA.

Thank you BookSirens and the author. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

If you want a slightly steamy holiday sweet meet romance, this is it. The FMC escapes to Scotland where she meets a heartthrob Scottish man any single lady would grovel for. All the holiday vibes and feels are in this. There are parties and pubs and a cottage I personally want to live in for a week as I write my own novel series.

The author aimed for an easy, cozy read with an FMC showing emotional growth and she achieved that goal well.

A Holiday Away is an easy read that doesn't contain any extremely up or down plot twists. It flows constantly and that makes it easier to read.

I liked Jane and Leo's chemistry. The time they spent together, it didn't feel like just two weeks. I also liked that they handled the situation with maturity and didn't made it complicated.

I really want a sequel for Jake. I really felt bad for him at last. He too deserves love and happiness.

✨ARC Review ✨

This is the perfect cozy holiday read! Jane takes a trip to Scotland alone after the breakup with her only boyfriend. Scotland in the winter brings its own challenges.

Leo is managing the property Jane rented for her vacation.

Jane has the opportunity to learn who she is and what she really wants during her holiday.

I loved the premise because traveling to Scotland after a relationship breakup seemed very brave and cathartic. I love to travel and Scotland is on my bucket list!

I loved the characters. I loved the small town feel and I picture the pub clearly in my mind. The author paints clear pictures with the words.

Received ARC from Book Sirens for honest review. I look forward to more from this author.

Again with the miscommunication.. Be ADULTS for crying out loud!!!

But I can really relate to the FMC Jane. She goes to Scotland after a breakup with her high school sweetheart and decides to focus on herself and do things she never done before. Until she meets Leo.

It was a cute romantic Christmas story but it took me a lot to finish it tbh.

A cozy holiday read. Gardner take you from heartbreak to hope with a lot of bumps in between. I challenge you to read this and not want to run away to Scotland for Christmas. This is the second book I've read by her and it definitely will not be the last.

The best HEA

Great romance stories are about the chemistry with the characters, and not just the main romance. The friends, the family, the flow of external forces that lead your lovers to each other. The timing of this book is a wonderful show of that chemistry. I loved the story, the slow burn (don’t worry, your HEA is very celebrated, but you’re going to earn it with plenty of tension), and the acknowledgment that sometimes relationships just don’t work. Every romance doesn’t end because one party is terrible, though it hurts all the same, and what you find in the wake can be phenomenal.
