By analyzing the whole range of Visconti's films - the first such study to be published in English - Geoffrey Newell-Smith here traces the links and connections in his work beneath the apparent differences of approach, thus presenting a coherent picture of Visconti and his work.
Nowell-Smith's book is really informative: if you didn't know about Visconti's aristocratic origins, his left-wing politics and much else, this book will tell you. Rocco and His Brothers, White Nights, La Terra Trema, The Leopard, etc--these films were influential in forming my movie tastes, and Nowell-Smith covers them well. Some of the photos are really stunning.
