In Search of Channel Void

Rate this book
Channel Void is just a weird old TV show…

That’s what Paul thought at least until the night it invaded his mind with a vivid dream that sent him searching for the truth. After diving down a deep rabbit hole of strange theories on the black and white sci-fi anthology series, he finds himself believing more than ever that the episodes are based on more than creator Ron Shea’s vivid, overactive imagination.

With his skeptical boyfriend by his side, Paul embarks on a quest across America to prove the hundred and seventy-two episodes of Channel Void are real, but he soon discovers there may be more to his assumption than he thought. As things get weirder, it becomes clear the fabric of reality may need some mending, and Paul can’t figure out how Ron Shea’s untold private life factors into everything. Matters only get worse when the energy’s opposition manifests in the form of the mysterious Men in White who want to stop the truth from getting discovered.

Paul has no choice but to rely on new friends and strangers to help him sort through what’s real and what’s come from trash-talking skeptics and conspiracy theorists. Do all the pieces falling from the multiverse fit together, or had the whole thing been imagined from the start?

This book is written in the classic Daniel Aegan style, and is a queer story which will not leave you alone until you finish it. Mystery, a hint of romance, what the hell just happened moments, mind-warping events, and a travel into several dimensions will leave you wanting to know more, until the unexpected ending. No spoilers here. Open the book, and get carried away with the protagonist in search of Channel Void on a psychedelic road trip.

Intriguing concept as the protagonist, Paul, goes on a wild road trip to track down the truth behind Channel Void, an old Twilight Zone-esque television show that portrays eerie events that may have some basis in reality. Includes a creator that also recalls Rod Serling very much in the descriptions of the character and his narrative style. Loved the idea that a writer like Serling might have simply been transcribing events he witnessed in a place where realities cross and become blurred.

Paul starts out as a more passive character who gradually becomes obsessed with finding out the truth regardless of any personal cost. Slow start and some pacing issues. I felt the book could have been pared down to concentrate more on the central quest without some of the diversions and details that don't seem to add as much but that may just be a matter of personal taste. There were some editing issues in the ebook version I read as well that were distracting at times, but I was still invested enough in Paul and the central mystery to read through to the exciting ending. There were many points in the book when things seemed so hopeless for Paul that is was fun and often surprising to see how the author managed to extract him from those situations. There's some really nice humor too, including a charming rugby player who I won't spoil things by naming here. Tons of imagination on display and a fun read for fans of Twilight Zone and speculative sci fi.

What I Did Like:
+I love the concept of looking for evidence of an old show's storylines. The show gave me Twilight Zone vibes and it could be so fun to go searching for Twilight Zone sites!
+The tension builds in this one at a great pace. What seems almost like a lost cause in the beginning quickly becomes a sort of scavenger hunt; the stakes are raised at every piece found. I loved the vibe!
+Riddles! I love a good riddle so finding a way to work one on was absolutely perfect for me. Like the door scene in Labyrinth, it quickly became a favorite and I read it twice!
+Paul is a great character. He’s relatable and driven by the desire to solve the puzzle he’s managed to land in. He’d be a great character to read a series about.

Who Should Read This One:
-Fans of science fiction that involves alternate timelines or multiverses will like the layers of this one.
