When old Mr. Sobryne dies, he leaves a fortune to his three sons and his mistress. In a message from beyond the grave, he instructs them on its profitable disposal and foresees the attendant intrigues they will encounter. Little could he have known, though, how the beautiful Mathilde and the bumbling sons would lead a chase around the world and home again before they lose and regain and lose and regain the inheritance.
Delightful story about three intelligent and literate sons who unwittingly follow their deceased father's suppressed desires for adventure by together using and abusing their inheritance, half of which has been mysteriously spirited away, possibly by the father's mistress who accompanies their adventures. The sons are crazy, horny and, ultimately, quite reasonable while they learn lessons about themselves and what the world has for waiting for them.
Note: the synopsis on the book cover is misleading.
Van de Wetering wrote in English as well as his native Dutch so the cadence of his English writing takes some getting used to. Then it becomes a pleasure.
