She's broken. He's lost. Could love change everything for them both?
Finally escaping her small hometown, and problematic mother, Terra Thompson can’t believe she’s been accepted to study theater on London’s West End. When a last-hurrah musical meet-cute with a handsome stranger turns out to be the program’s teaching assistant, Terra fears she’s spoiled her chances for a fresh start before it’s even begun.
James Wallace knew he was in trouble the moment Terra kissed him. Drowning in his famous family’s demons, he just wants to blaze his own trail in life. He must resist his complicated feelings, and growing attraction, or risk turning into the man he hates the most—his philandering father.
After a fellow student suffers a tragic fall, and mysterious, threatening messages start to appear, Terra must discover who is sending them before she becomes the next victim. With Terra’s life on the line, and the program’s future hanging by a thread, the hunt could bring Terra and James closer together, or rip them apart forever.
Romantic suspense is not my typical genre so the page-turning quality of this story felt a little bit like trying a new candy. Different yet so very addicting.
This is a romance with broadway and Shakespearean themes. What struck me is JD’s obvious understanding of Shakespeare and her ability to weave references through the story in a way that left my heart POUNDING. The practice scene between James and Terra was 🥵. The tension and angst palpable.
Don’t let the Shakespeare stuff scare you. I, a true novice to Shakespeare, ate up every reference. And they left chills down my arms time and again. It was a true work of art that she could nod back to the classics so many times while still writing and incredible story.
The romance is sweet. I mean I love a good forbidden romance. Teacher/student? I’m all in.
And the prologue is one of the best I’ve ever read. Read it and then try to put the book down. I dare you.
I truly enjoyed this book and am so glad I got to read it!
Genre: romantic suspense Content: kisses; underage drinking; neglectful, alcoholic parents; mentions of casual sex (side characters + FMC’s past); some violence
I was sucked into this book right from the beginning! Terra is a young woman with ROUGH background— absent father, alcoholic/addict mother, numbing herself with hook ups. She wants more than anything to get out of Montana. She loves musical theater and enrolls in a program in London.
Jameston wants to get help for his alcoholic mother (who is in Montana); in order to do that, he has to bed to his well-known, scumbag father’s will, which is to lead a musical theater program.
Imagine the surprise they both experience when the person they spent their last night in Montana with ends up in London days later.
A lot of things are working to keep Terra and James apart but they have a bond and an understanding by their shared trauma experiences.
JD did a really good job of making me suspect someone of being behind the mysterious and dangerous things happening at the Opera House…but there kept being twists! The last 35 minutes of the book I had to read uninterrupted. I couldn’t put it down until I figured out who had done what!
Favorite Quotes: 💋 "Need a ride or something?" Terra eyed him suspiciously. "I don't get in cars with strangers." He chuckled. "Oh I see. You just draw the line at kissing them."
‼️ “…sometimes it's hard to see the pain of other people clearly when you're drowning in your own…”
❤️ Falling in love felt differently than she imagined. Like belonging. Like safety. Like the hole her childhood left in her heart finally healed. Not bandaged up or covered, but whole.
ARC Review. Thank you to author JD Rogers for the advanced copy of this book. This was my first time reading a book by JD and I enjoyed the story. This is a love story interlaced with mystery that kept me engaged until the end. Most of the book is written, in third person, from the perspective of the female main character, Terra. She is going through a lot of change and trying to find her way and a lot of her struggle with self-awareness is relatable. At times I wanted her to speak her truth, rather than let people run with their assumptions. I think we all encounter situations though where we feel like what we say won’t change someone’s mind, so we give up trying, so some of her withdrawal was understandable. It’s clear what Terra’s interests are but I was a little uncertain of where she was trying to get to, what her goals were with the experiences she was taking part in. I probably would have felt a little more connected to the male main character, James, if we had a little more of the story from his point of view. Overall, this was a good, closed-door romance, with a mystery that kept me guessing.
My first romantic suspense in a long while! Now I know the pull of this genre. Author JD Rogers knows how to reel you in. Midnight in the Thames is set in London (been there and want to go back). Terra meets the sweet and brooding James in a barn at their ranch in Montana. But she doesn’t think much about it because she’s leaving the next day for theater classes in London. But that night changes James for the better and he never thought he’d see her again when she left before the sun came up. They came face to face in the classroom as James was Terra’s TA. Things get a little dicey when a fellow student plummets from the catwalk. Then everyone thinks she’s sleeping with the lead star of the play to get casted as the co-lead. Then she gets threatening messages saying to go home and a bunch of mice get let loose in her room. The cutest make-up scene happens in the Kew Gardens. You’ve got to read it for yourself. Thank you JD for and arc. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Midnight on the Thames -REVIEW Musical Theatre is amazing. It was a huge part of my life for several years, and now I still love going to see shows from time to time. Getting to read this book dropped me back into that world, and I absolutely LOVE IT! I loved how I didn't know how the story would end. It was a mystery what was going to happen next, which was a great change of pace for me. This book was so easy to read and I loved the added drama and mystery to the romance. Terra and James are great and have an amazing chemistry. I could feel the tension (/romance) building off the page. It was done very well. Both of their characters are very well developed as well. They each had very real issues and struggles they were dealing with. Loved this book, and loved getting to travel to London! ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5 Stars Highly recommend! . EXTRA: Thank you to the author for an e-ARC copy of this book. A positive review was not required. All thoughts, views, and opinions are my own.
Terra is a rough around the edges (for good reason) woman who gets into a theater program in London. Upon her first day she realizes the teacher’s assistant is the same guy she kissed the night before.
After one of the students suffers a tragic fall, it becomes clear that someone wants Terra to leave.
This book kept me guessing as to who the villain was; it’s been a while since I lost sleep over a book!
I’ve been to London a couple of times and it was great to revisit through Midnight on the Thames! I’m just glad someone wasn’t stalking me… Or were they?
Read if you like: 🎶Musicals 🔍Mystery/Suspense 🔥Slow burn romance 👨🏫Student/teacher trope
Content: This is a closed door romance. The FMC attempts to make it an open door book but the MMC stops her (thanks James 😘) There is one mention of her picturing intimate acts in her head but it’s not descriptive. There is no cursing.
From the very beginning J.D. captured my attention and never let it go until the very last page. The mystery aspect was so well done and it kept me guessing the entire time. I love dark academia and the setting and plot very much aligned with that vibe - gloomy yet beautiful London with classic lit and theatre elements. Terra as the fmc was realistic and relatable. She was very rough around the edges but that’s what made her so believable. In fact all of the characters were a bit messy and that’s why I loved them. This book has one of my favorite tropes, forbidden love and I loved James and Terra together. Overall, this was such a fun and interesting read.
I am honored that I was able to beta read for such a wonderful author 🫶🏼
I’m new to the suspenseful romance genre and I’m finding myself a fan!
JD Rogers pulls the reader in from the first pages of the prologue and doesn’t let up until the final page. This book is a very slow burn that frustrated me at times. James was written as a very stubborn character. So much so that for a few chapters I found myself disliking his character enough I wanted to quit reading. However, I stuck it out and I’m glad I did.
Overall, I would give this book 4.5 out of 5 stars but believe it deserved a 5 star rating compared to a 4 star for the Goodreads scale.

Why did it take me so long to read this book? J.D. beautifully blends romance and suspense and keeps you turning the page. I love that she included Shakespeare and Broadway references! The chemistry between Terra and James is electric.
I cannot wait for J.D. Rogers' next book! If you haven't read one of her books, you should!
Content Warning: -Alcohol abuse -Neglectful parent -Murder -Kisses Only -No Language
I loved the mystery elements entangled in this romance! James and Terra had great chemistry and lots of angst in their journey. If you love a good romance with tons of tension and intrigue sprinkled in, you will LOVE Midnight on the Thames!
This was such a great romantic suspense! Things got intense😅 Terra was so relatable - reading some of her thoughts I cried. When her and James kiss in the rain awww🫠 I read it almost in one sitting (mom life😄) it was hard to put down!
I really enjoyed Rogers’ other book, Midnight on the Tigris, so I thought I’d give this one a chance even though I’m not a huge fan of suspense. I actually liked the mystery here and the chemistry between Terra and James. I, unfortunately, cannot stand the miscommunication trope, and both characters seemed to refuse to give the other time to explain themselves. Especially our precious MMC. Sir, you look so dumb rn making assumptions instead of letting Terra speak. Hmph.

Take me back to London! JD Rogers completely transports readers into London’s West End with her New Romantic suspense novel. And wow, what a trip.
I was intrigued from page one of this book, but let me tell you, chapter two really sold it for me and got me hooked. I could not put this down until I knew how Terra and James got that happily ever after. Rogers throws lots of twists and turns in this book with danger, excitement, sorrow and swoony tension that can be felt off the pages. The practice scene in class…ya, you don’t want to miss that part of the book.
Terra and James have a chemistry that has so many elements to it. I don’t want to spoil it for other readers so go pick it up and discover for yourselves because it is a treat to read their story. Fantastic characters who keep the story moving, London’s charm mixed with a longing for home, lots of suspense and Shakespeare references. What more could you want in a book? Such a great read, definitely grab yourself a copy today!
*I received an advanced ecopy from the publisher/author and all opinions are my own.
Intriguing from the start! Grabbed hold of me and didn’t let go! Loved the mystery and romance between the two main characters. Terra and James were both complex characters, especially Terra. I would feel bad for her one minute and want to yell at her the next. It was definitely keeping me hooked and up past my bedtime because I never knew what was going to happen next. James fell so hard but was so resistant. I loved seeing their connection through all that they had in common. All the twists and turns throughout the book made for a fast-paced ride that was very beautifully written! I didn’t see the ending coming! Rogers wows me every time and I love her stories so much!
