Following on from the Wallace's War, The Hunt is another novel in the Lord Edward’s Archer series. ‘Medieval adventure with the pace and power of a war arrow in flight.’ Matthew Harffy, bestselling author of the Bernicia Chronicles Stirling Bridge is a haunting memory for King Edward. When Scottish rebels threaten his northern borders the king acts swiftly to quash it. William Wallace remains a threat and hiding across the seas he sends his hunter to fetch him back. Sir Gerald Warbow is no longer a young man and his frame is not that of a young archer but he is the most trusted of King Edward’s men and he is sent to France to bring back the rebel who has defied him.
I was born in 1950 in Lancashire and attended a boy’s grammar school. After qualifying as an English and Drama teacher in 1972, I worked in the North East of England for the next 35 years. During that time I did write, mainly plays, pantos and musicals for the students at the three schools in which I worked.
When I stopped teaching I set up my own consultancy firm and worked as an adviser in schools and colleges in the North East of England. The new Conservative Government ended that avenue of work and in 2010 I found that I had time on my hands; having started work at the age of 15 I found the lack of work not to my liking and used the time to research the Roman invasion of Britain and begin to create a novel. The result was The Sword of Cartimandua.
My decision to begin writing was one of the best I have ever taken.
Gerald Warbow is back out hunting William Wallace in Scotland, France and England before hunting him back in Scotland where, like a wild boar, he stands at bay. There are less battles/skirmishes in this book that one normally finds in a Warbow book and more of Gerald’s domestic life which, surprisingly, made the book more interesting to me. Poor Gerald is getting old with all the issues of aching joints and weak bladder etc.: I know just how he feels! Finally our hero gives up his war bow and lets his son, Hamo, take command of the archers. With Wallace finally out of the picture I think there will be just one more book in this series unless Hamo continues the tales into the reign of the flawed King Edward II. I always enjoy reading books by Griff Hosker. He churns out so many books a year my head spins. Just how he manages to research, write then publish so many without dropping the quality of the story telling I cannot say, but he does. Oh, and this was the paperback issue.
Another great read. I understand Gerald as I am approaching 84 years on this Earth. He is tired and so am I. In his day men did not live as long as we do now. Their wounds made life difficult for them, even as Arthritis does us from jumping out of airplanes and Helicopter Crashes. If you are an old Warrior like I am you will enjoy all of Mr. Hosker’s books, as I do. Warbow’s time is almost finished. It will be a sad parting. Give The Hunt a try. I think you will enjoy the Adventure.
This is another good yarn about Gerald War bow the king's archer. He is near fifty summers old now, but strong and very measured and wise. These traits he has bestowed upon his own children and grandchildren as well. I hope for his own sake that the King will allow him to retire......and so does Mary and his family.
A captivating read which puts a totally different slant on the life and capture of William Wallace that has very little in common with the Brave Heart imagery portrayed by Mel Gibson. I personally prefer the portrayal in The Hunt.
This is one of the best series of the many written by Griff Hosker. It has been a pleasure reading all the books of the series. I don't know if this is the conclusion, perhaps one more to round off everything.
I enjoy historical fiction and the story of Gerald Warbow as told by Hosker is akin to being in a medieval hall being regaled by the story teller himself. I am anxiously awaiting the next episode
The author has a rare ability too blend a story using known historical context and an enjoyable story. He uses locations which are known to exist and these provide an anchor for the reader's imagination.
Historical and informative enjoyed the bits between battles, life at Yarpole fairness for all his family and friends, his ability change from a warrior to thoughtful sharing master when needed.
I enjoy most of the books written by Griff. They're always action packed and accurate to the historical side. I look forward to the next in the series.
Really have enjoyed the Lord Edwards Archer series of books. They are written so I could see what was happening as I was reading brilliant writing Griff hosker
I was elated to see a new book in the Lord Edward’s Archer series! Wallace’s War did not disappoint! Sir Gerald & his men are called back to King Edward’s Scottish campaign. Sir Gerald is tasked with capturing the elusive William Wallace. The novel is a taut, action packed tale of both the war & the great hunt. Sir Gerald nearly dies on his quest. Though Sir Gerald disagrees on Edward’s brutal quest to possess Scotland & the matter of Wallace, he (Gerald) is “the King’s Man” to the end! I eagerly await the next book!
