“In life, always choose a serious rival even if you know you have no chance to win because a good rival is always a good teacher!” –Mehmet Murat ildan

>SPOILER ALERT: This review may contain ***SPOILERS ***

>>Rating: Mature due to language and adult content not appropriate for young readers. We hear of the atrocities of the SBRB and he was a mess. Violence and an abduction attempt: Seriously, someone needs to put that mad dog down.
>>Angst Level: pretty stressful during certain scenes but aggravating most of the time
>>I Borrowed this from KU on 10-9-23 and volunteered to leave a review. The thoughts, opinions, and views expressed are my own work. I first read this as it was being posted on the forums. I was happy to read it again as a published work. This author also publishes her stories in Spanish.
>>Trope: [1] This was the haughty, stick up… you know, Darcy that we love to hate. This guy was a mess. His relatives were even worse and their example was probably what formed his gosh-awful opinions. Even his mother… well, she was a Fitzwilliam… need I say more. [2] Spinless: led by the nose, Bingley. [3] different pairing for our Jane.

Two men, who had been rivals since university, were vying for the affection of one woman, Miss Elizabeth Bennet. Both men were a good match for her but only one could and would win her heart.

It was way into the story before our dear Fitzwilliam Darcy was knocked off his high horse. Until that time, he was horrid and obnoxious. Whew! Then his sister nearly ruined them all and yet he had the gall to look down on the Bennet family. You see, they were only minor gentry with ties to trade, for goodness’ sake. Darcy had to admit that Miss Bennet and Miss Elizabeth were the exceptions. In spite of their being daughters of a gentleman, their mother was from trade, and vulgar, and the younger girls were a nightmare. And, they had an uncle who lived near his warehouses in Cheapside. It was too much for the scion of Pemberley.

Darcy realized his friend was another matter and a problem. Bingley was still mooning over his ‘angel of the month’ and his sisters had rushed to Darcy House to announce that Miss Jane Bennet, and her sister, were in town. Darcy didn’t want his friend connected to a woman that he felt didn’t love him and was only looking for a fortune to secure the family. Darcy and the sisters made plans to keep Bingley from knowing that Miss Bennet was in town. They felt such a low match would not help him… um... them advance into the level of society they desired. It was a tangled mess. And then it got worse. Oh, dear.

I have enjoyed this author’s work both on the forums and when they are published in spite of minor errors consistent with language differences. The rivalry between Darcy and Reed became tedious but lessons were learned on both sides and true love finally won out. I enjoyed the pairings.

Just awful

I cannot understand how this book got the high rating that got me to buy it. It is sloppily written, needs editing and spell check. Almost impossible to follow the myriad characters. Just awful.

The Epilogue Was Cute

Yes, children, no matter how old they are, who were rivals, especially siblings, will continue their petty rivalries throughout their lives. This was cutely written in the epilogue as Darcy and his rival argued about who bested whom before their granddaughter.

The rest of the book contains a good amount of the sad history of their rivalry and even its origins.

The problem is that the writer and, if there was an editor, the editor have only a vague idea of English, grammar, punctuation, and subject/object or pronoun harmony. Even the use of a thesaurus was lacking. Everyone was 'very nervous', (could they not be anxious, worried, or apprehensive once in a while?) Everyone 'chirped', (were they birds?) And don't ask how many times the subject was female but she did something to 'his' friend, sister, cousin, or nephew!
Did no one know that the pronoun used should harmonize with the subject?

All of this made the reading very tedious and annoying! And the subject matter wasn't interesting enough to warrant a second reading! Don't bother.

Good storyline

The theme of Elizabeth being somewhat courted by Albert Reed, who is a tradesman friend of her Uncle Gardner's, a friend of Bingley and longtime rival of Darcy. They explore their own biases, with a side of almost entrapment from a poor titled family, bad behavior from the Fitzwilliam's, Wickham thrown in for good measure and of course Jane with her broken heart. There is some loving from a distance and almost two love triangles with Elizabeth and Jane (separately of course) that get worked out nicely. Almost everyone gets a happy ending.
My biggest issues were the pronoun and word uses which became distracting and took away from what the author wanted to say. That is why I deducted 2 stars as it needed further editing.

really wanted to give this more stars

But just couldn’t get past the writing and poor editing. The author was always making a statement and then following up with “because”. In fact, the word because was used 373 times in this book. I know BECAUSE I checked! (Yes, some of the because’s were that obvious and were not needed). With some editing I believe the book could be better. I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it either.

Mixed emotions

Very intricate plot with lots of non-canon characters, and plenty of twists and turns. Definitely needs editing as there are many grammatical errors, probably because English is a second language for the author. A very nasty Darcy, a very weak Georgiana and a strong Lizzy. Writing style is a little stilted.

Proofreading required

The book had a good premise, but there were so many grammatical mistakes that it distracted from the story. I wondered if was AI generated, but thought there might not be so many mistakes. Also, there were several places where words were misused. A good editor would make the story much more enjoyable.

Nice

- I enjoyed the rivalry between Darcy and Reed.

- I usually enjoy the author's original characters, and this was no exception. However, Anne and Lady Catherine's scenes could have been omitted since they served no purpose.

- The ending was abrupt, but overall, I'm glad I read it.

Enjoyable read

I enjoyed reading this variation. While some parts were a little far fetched. The majority of the story was written according to the time period.

I shook my head in "disbelief" so many times whilst reading this book, I almost needed a neck brace.
