Dive into Vixen's gripping debut novel, a raw and unfiltered journey through the queer escorting underworld. Inspired by true events, it captures the allure, danger, and redemption of the nocturnal world, offering readers an authentic portrayal of life behind the scenes. Perfect for fans of LGBTQ+ narratives and gritty, real-life tales.
From the neon-lit streets to quiet, intimate moments, Vixen brings forth a story that is both harrowing and uplifting, a testament to the human spirit's resilience and the transformative power of genuine connection. Beyond the pages, he is an advocate for understanding and destigmatizing the lives of escorts, emphasizing the profound complexities of human emotion and interaction that often remain unseen.
This novel is not just a tale—it's a fragment of a lived life, a mirror reflecting the dualities and grey areas that many shy away from, and an invitation to empathize, understand, and delve deeper into the intricacies of the human heart.
Vixen's journey is as multifaceted as the Tarot cards he once read as an escort. Navigating the complex layers of human desire and connection, he found solace and understanding within them and his clients.
Born into a world of ephemeral connections and societal judgment, Vixen navigated a path riddled with challenges. Yet, amidst the chaos and the nights that seemed to stretch into oblivion, he discovered an inner strength, a voice that had been stifled for too long. His experiences, both tumultuous and tender, and his search for connection through his Tarot abilities, laid the foundation for his debut novel.
An author who intertwines shadow and light, Vixen channels his unique experiences into his writing, painting authentic tales of love, loss, and self-discovery. His prose resonating with vulnerability and fierce determination, painting a portrait of a soul in search of meaning. "Rent Boy" delves deep into the complexities of love-not just romantic love, but self-love, and the courage it takes to reclaim one's power in a world that often seeks to diminish it. It's about confronting the darkest corners of existence, challenging societal norms, and emerging with a love that is pure, unwavering, and transcendent. Through his words, he beckons readers to embark on a journey of introspection and, ultimately, liberation.
I kindly received a copy of this book from the author, in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Rent Boy is a captivatingly queer novel; an auto-fiction of sorts inspired by the author's own life as a gay escort. It is overflowing with queer slang, and the writing style was very unique, loaded with metaphors and adjectives. While I do appreciate experimentation, this did become slightly tiresome and convoluted at times. It made for some incredible quotes and visceral imagery like "peeling wallpaper hung from the walls like the fading dreams of a vintage starlet" but when that happens all the time, it can be a bit much.
While the writing was a bit clunky at times, I feel like this can be attributed to the fact that its an indie book and doesn't have the same rigorous editing process as mainstream books do, as well as the writing style.
I absolutely loved the layout of the book. Each chapter has a fun and creative title, as well as a quote from the ensuing chapter that really engaged me as a reader.
I loved the characters, I thought they were very well done. Even the more minor characters had so much personality to them. The main character especially is one of those ones that you root for, despite them making the wrong decisions time and time again.
Now; the ending. I was really enjoying this book up until the last 50 pages or so, which left me extremely disappointed. There was a major plot twist when everything came to a head, except it wasn't the conclusion I was hoping for. I just felt it didn't at all coincide with the themes that were set out during the entirety of the book, and it was all done for the sake of entertainment. It wasn't even like the book needed any more action: it was packed with it from start to finish. The ending just felt rushed and unresolved, and unfortunately the reason I couldn't rate this book any higher.
Despite the ending, I still thought this was a great read. It was completely unlike anything I've read before, and I think it provides an important insight into the lives of sex workers, especially queer sex workers. I definitely recommend it.
As a tarot lover myself . Tarot is beautifully woven into this story. Vixen a gay escort and his life, struggles and the people he meets along the way. Many characters. But vixens relationship with Quinn is so sweet and rae and real. I didn't see the ending coming but made sense to me. Its a story of fighting to do what's right , that that path is not a easy path to take and about us being our true selves in life and in love . Beautifully written. Check your trigger warnings before reading .
When I picked up this book I had a feeling I was going to love it but I had not anticipated the beautiful poetic writing. I was hanging on to every delicious sentence. It was a ‘stop and read that part again because it was so good’ situation. I LOVED this book. I couldn’t put it down. I read it in one day. I’ve already ordered a physical copy because beautiful writing like this deserves annotations. I’ll be rereading this one many times. I absolutely recommend. It’s a goodie.
Too chaotic for my tastes. Like any piece of art -- painting, novel, sculpture, garment -- the eye needs a place to rest occasionally. This was absent in this tale, as not a single sentence was written without an unnecessary plethora of over-the-top adjectives. It gave the impression of even the most minor details being "important" plot points or environmental elements.
This novel-ography could have benefitted from an understanding editor.
Written and Narrated by Vixen I was not ready for how emotional this book would be, and I was pleasantly surprised to get more than I bargained for. If you’ve seen my reviews, you know I love a book that will make me cry, and this one did it. Vixen’s story is so raw; he’s very honest about the fact that the mess of his life has come to be because of some bad decisions he’s made. But the thing that really struck me about him is his resilience. There’s many times that Vixen feels like there’s nothing left for him, and it’s not worth going on. But he hustles and pushes through, hoping that something better will come. A very raw look at life as an escort, and at being inches away from breaking.
Ye gods & little fishes! This story had me all up in my feels and still ...I guess, kinda stunned by the circumstances that played out.
Wherever Quinn & "Dolly" end up, I hope their heart-love keeps them together.
I would definitely read more by this author, as his captivating storyline kept me on the edge of my seat, at turns laughing and crying as the tale unfolds. Sure didn't foresee THAT ending though! Wow!
Btw, I noticed that author has designed a deck of Tarot cards, so I'll keep a lookout for them; haven't worked with them in a while, so it'll be interesting to see if I can get back into that groove.
A must read - even if it isn't your preferred genre
I can't remember the last time I read something so riveting! The writing is phenomenal. The story pulls you in from the git-go and REFUSES to let you go.
This book is quirky, sassy, snarky, and yeah, downright emotional. The last few chapters absolutely wrecked me.
Side note- there is zero smut in this book. Sexual acts are alluded to but never described in detail.
I really enjoyed the glimpses of real experience I saw in this book. I found some of the prose a bit awkward but tbh I really enjoyed the whole thing. Giving it this rating because I was a little depressed after finishing it! Vixen proves he has talent with the most heartbreaking one liners. I busted out the highlight function on my ereader for the first time ever with this novel.
What a read. This story broke my heart. I love the realness and the raw vulnerability of this book. It is written a little different, but that is because it is the inner musing of Vixen.
I couldn't get very far into this one. The main character is so grandiose, vapid, and shallow that I just couldn't get through the book. The writing style is pretentious and choppy. I am just not in the mood.
