“Working in the campus bookstore wasn’t my ideal job, but it was what afforded me the opportunity to run into my first crush, my old swim coach. Andre Dupree was a beautiful man, and for the few years he coached my intramural swimming club, the Squids, I spent every practice just staring at him. I never dreamed I’d get a second chance with my first crush, but that day he was standing in front of me with a smile that nearly melted my clothes off my body. He was even more gorgeous than I remembered. He also had a girlfriend and I was reminded of his long list of conquests from high school. I didn’t stand a chance in hell.

“Fate had a crazy way of reminding people life wasn’t fair. My reminder came at the hands of a person I hardly knew. I met new people, made new friends, faced many new challenges, and learned my way around campus, but nothing prepared me for the darkness coming my way. Learning to navigate the aftermath of the worst event in my young life was one of the hardest things I’d ever done, and I tried to do it alone. People in my life fought to stay even as I tried to push them out. There was one person who fought the hardest…the Swim Coach.” Colton J. Wixsom

I grew up in the rural Midwest before moving to the East Coast with a dashing young man who swept me off my feet, and we've now settled in the desert of Nevada. I write M/M contemporary romance, subgenres: sweet low angst, age-gap, cowboys, mysteries, and military/mercenary to name a few. I am a firm believer in "Love is Love" regardless of how it presents itself, and I'm a staunch ally of the LGBTQIA+ community.

I have a loving, supportive family, and I feel blessed by the universe and thankful every day for all I have been given. I’m old enough to know how to have fun, but too old to care what others think about my definition of a good time. In my heart and soul, I believe I hit the cosmic jackpot. Cheers!

Colton was unlikable and judgemental making it difficult to warm up to him. He was extremely petulant and he constantly made something out of nothing. After he was I still felt a disconnect towards him. He was very Jekyll and Hyde. He would freak at the smallest trigger reacting violent in the worst way and in the next paragraph become overtly sexual towards Andre.

It was confusing. I'm aware not all survivors heal at the same pace and would never want to pigeon-hold anyone into a certain time table. I am also aware of the fact that everyone possesses different coping mechanisms but, Colton just bugged me. Maybe my lack of compassion for him was a result of my dislike of him prior to the incident. He lacked a likability that made it really hard for me to connect with him so I dnf'd.

There's a very special relationship between a coach and a team member.

It is difficult to hide as a swimmer wearing a Speedo out of water. Even in water the strokes and kicks create brief glimpses for the crowd watching the races at a swim meet. The team gets even more sightings on the bench, the sidelines, and the locker room. But since everyone is equal, it is acceptable for the sport.

But away from the pool for other exercises and running or weight lifting, the uniforms or sweats cover much more. It is not uncommon for swimmers to take notice of each other and play snarky and hassling games to wind up or embarrass others.

Most sports have sexual undertones in the training and execution of movements. It is usually not made into a big deal unless someone takes it too far. Even crushed are usually shortlived with high school students and avoided by faculty.

But what if fate brings things together after the situation changes? A former swim coach upper classman and a freshman at the same college that were on the same team/coach in high school. The world changes when you go to college as many new costs and contacts make classes, jobs, housing, cars, sports, and opportunities much more important, yet much more challenging. Entertainment and parties offer more unsupervised chances for sex, drinking, drugs, fighting, disrupting, and general mayhem to keep it interesting or get in big trouble.

Roommates can be a help or a curse. The first one for Colton was a bad one long before he came to UW. But Colton was able to use his personality, looks, friends, family, and counseling to overcome the negatives and become a loved and respected community member while dedicating his life to helping others. It was not always easy, but he found a perfect boyfriend to help him overcome the mental, physical, and emotional damage he was forced to live with. He even got a set of wings to help him soar!
