After being framed for her parent’s death and ending up in an insane asylum, Maya escapes and hopes to settle down in a small town in the middle of nowhere. The small house seems like the perfect place to bury the ghosts of her past, but sometimes those ghosts refuse to stay dead, and perfect isn’t so perfect after all. After meeting her neighbor Drake and the two men who live with him, Maya notices things aren’t quite right with the three men. She didn’t think her life could get any stranger, but when she notices the animals hunting her—particularly the wolves. Maya finds herself in a never-ending battle to keep them away, much to her landlord and his friend’s amusement. Little does she know that those wolves are more than they seem, and so is her landlord. That they aren’t just stalking her as prey, but they are hunting their mate.

~Author Note~
The first six chapters are on the darker side, but this book is a comedy romance.

So, I love Jessica Hall. I really do. She's an auto buy author for me. If she writes it, I'm gonna read it. This one was tough for me. I have read, I don't even know how many of her books at this point, and this reads more like her first book than one down the line. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. I loved the premise. I enjoyed parts. It just felt like one book that decided to change into a different book and never really decided what it wanted to be. Will this stop me from continuing to read her work? Never. Just left me very confused.

TLDR: Do yourself a favor and skip this one because it was actually painful to finish.

Let’s dissect it here before I erase it from my memory.

- I felt like this book thought it was funnier than it actually was. All the supposedly funny moments were just super cringe/embarrassing/humiliating.
- The female pack member who accepts the FMCs deposit in the beginning is said to be super excited for another female in the pack and then we never see her interact with that girl or any other member of their pack besides the three MMCs.
- FMC finds out about their secret and then automatically moves in with them when her cabin is literally a few min walk away. For what reason??
- World building is weak. All we know is that werewolves, the council, mates, and apparently hybrids exist, but none of that is explained in this world so we are just as confused as the FMC. Who makes up the council? What are hybrids? What is the mate lore? Guess we were supposed to make it up on our own.
- We know who the villain is like 1/3 of the way thru the book and then we’re just waiting for all the characters to communicate to put all the puzzle pieces together. And the villain was cartoonishly stupid and sends evidence of his own crimes to them. After that, he just shows up to attack them by himself against three other wolves with no plan. So bad.

The chicken story was actually the best part of the freaking book. Loved the little twist with the duck. Should have just skipped to the end to read it smh. But I don’t understand how the chicken is a male? That also is either never explained or I didn’t care enough to remember.

Ok done. Now I’m just going to pretend that Jessica never wrote this book.

Into the Woods
By Jessica Hall
Narrated by Gunnar Qualen and Jenna St. Claire

Laugh out loud, fall in love, be scared, you name it, and Jessica Hall has packed it into this fun and amazing story! Now I am not normally a paranormal listener, but I was pulled into this story and could not stop listening! Maya has had a tough life. Unloved by her parents, wrongly accused of murder, stashed away in a hospital, she finally breaks free and is seeking some solitary time to just live and heal. The cabin in the woods seems like the perfect place, but her landlord Drake is a bit overbearing. Constantly checking on her and seeking her attention, he is slowly catching it. What does Drake see in Maya? Well, with his two brothers and himself, these werewolves see their mate. What does Maya see? Between the chickens and the towns people, the mystery of her parents' death and the hysterical antics of the wolves, I found myself completely invested in the outcome. Jessica Hall has a new fan in her club and I am looking forward to more from her
.
Gunnar Qualen and Jenna St Claire are favorites of mine, and I loved every minute of their duet narration. Qualen falls into each of his characters, gives them the best personalities, with spot on comedic timing and all the emotional turmoil they go through. I especially loved Clay and Teriyaki! St Claire is fantastic as Maya. She is a complex woman, been through a lot and St Claire delivers her emotional baggage perfectly. Loved this performance as I laughed and fell in love!

I really wanted to love this story because J.H. wrote it but :-(

I feel awful giving this book a four because Jessica Hall is such an incredible writer. Even without the hot scenes her story telling skills are incredible. She usually weaves a story that is heartfelt, and engaging from the first chapter. Therefore, I was disappointed that this book did not deliver on those skills I've grown to love. Yes, the story had funny parts. Yes, the story had cute scenes. Yes, the story had a neat beginning, middle and end. However, the story did not flow. The transitions were off, the characters feel like they were thrown together, I couldn't fall in love with their back stories to understand their current struggles and I found myself re-reading paragraphs to understand what or why the author went to that particular scene without giving us more details. I hate to compare this to her previous writing but this story could have used a few more scenes and a tad more editing. The story feels like it should be fleshed out. I'm struggling with writing such an honest review because I know writing is hard work and I don't have the skills required to spin such wonderful stories but this one did not do it for me. I'm torn between loyalty to the author and giving an honest opinion of the book.

And I love reading anything and everything in between Christian romance and dark romance which is why this one is hard for me :-(

Fair to midland....

I hate to just give the story 2 stars since I generally love reading books by Jessica Hall. But, I have to say that this is the first time I've really been disappointed by her writing. It wasn't the typos, of which there were some doozies, and it wasn't the premise, either. It was just a lackluster story. The agony that Maya endured, never being believed, that's something I think a lot of women can relate to. Especially when it comes to being stalked, unfortunately. While there is some truly gut-busting hilarity in these pages, the story was just not that great. I felt no connection to Drake or Keegan and just a mild one to Clay. Maya was a bit too forgiving, in my opinion, but I can write that off as a product of her trauma. All-in-all, it was just okay to me.

Intriguing storyline

I loved the first 85% of this book! A very intriguing storyline and loads of funny moments that had me reading them over again so I could keep laughing!

The last 15% was rushed. I feel it could have had its own book or another 100 pages, so it didn't have to wrap up so fast and this would have made it as impactful as the first 5 chapters.

Not as "erotic" as Jessica's other book series' I have read, but a great story! Reminds me of the movie "Safe Haven".

I really struggled with this one. I was hoping it would get better and got far enough in that I figured I might as well finish. The plot holes were strong with this one. Telling her it would take an hour to walk into town, then they drove her, taking 3 hours? I didn't feel any real chemistry between the characters, it was rushed and kind of random. I had a hard time grasping the time frames. I don't want to give anything away by saying what else I took issue with. The person who recommended it to me loved this book, and I love that for her. Just wasn't for me.

I need more

Jessica Hall books are the best ever this book is so great I laughed till I cried over and over. This book seemed to be over in minutes it had me so hooked I could not put it down. It’s one of those books that captures you in the first minute and you just want more. It says it’s a 5hour book but I was done in 3 as I could not get my head out. Jessica hall is one of the best authors I’ve had the privilege to find.

HILARIOUS AND CUTE

This book def starts out dark but quickly shifts to a super funny, why choose paranormal rom com. It still has dark, sad notes, but I laughed so much. It was such an amazing ride watching her, and these men realize their feelings while also discovering what happened to her and who was behind it. I loved this book so much. Another amazing book from this author.

So much potential…

I bought this book based on a video of what it was supposed to be like. While the story line was decent, the writing was extremely juvenile. There were so many holes in the plot, spelling and grammar errors, and it’s fade to black in a really annoying way. A two for the storyline potential, but that feels generous. If this had been KU I would have DNF’d at ten% but since it was SEVEN dollars I forced myself to finish it.

It started unbelievable. Example was voicemail and then going home. I honestly couldn’t tell if she was crazy or not.

There wasn’t a lot of detail about the supernatural world throughout. Also, where was the pack after the gas station moment? What happened to the fish?

I enjoyed the HEA ending with a why choose. The 3 males were so uniquely different. 18+ with minimal sexual detail.

Into the woods intrigues you from the beginning. Once you begin reading it you won't be able to put it down. Murder, mystery, humour combined with romance. It is one of Jessica's funniest books. The comic relief balances the underlying serious theme. Brilliantly written.

I have seen your comedy come through in other books but DAMN! I laughed so hard with this one. An engaging story to be sure, I would have liked a few more details but I loved it as is!

3.5. I don’t love love it but I don’t dislike it either. Just doesn’t quite have the character growth I look for in a story. But it’s some really funny hijinks amongst a bunch of trauma. Plus someone writing chicken shifter fiction!!!! One of my fav bits

Has potential

The plot is great but The female lead is too trusting and has no fight to be so traumatized. The ML's put in crappy effort to win her, and she definitely let's them get away with too much. It just ruined it for me.
