Great ideas for blockchain, but not if it uses mined crypto
Blockchain is a fascinating technological tool and the author does a great job of talking about the ways in which this asset tracking and exchange technology can be used with such items as forestry, water, carbon and more. But in a few places the author ignores the incredible impact on the environment that occurs with crypto mining where massive amounts of power are consumed generating new “coins”. While blockchain can be a great tracking and exchange tool, if it also leverages mined crypto, it’s a wash - the damage of the power consumption to mine coins equals or even outweighs the conservation effort of the resource that is being controlled on blockchain. Overall, though, a lot of great ideas backed up with case studies that show just how useful blockchain can be if properly used and applied.
The book How Blockchain Can Save Our Planet by Jaya Bijoor has many good reviews, and I wanted to know more about blockchain. I also care about our plant, so this was a good purchase. Jaya begins with the definition of the technology behind blockchain and some of the related technology. He then explained how this technology should be ethically applied in environmentally friendly projects. This book is a short read (58 pages) but an excellent introduction to blockchain technology. Specifically, Jaya makes the connection between ethically using this technology to promote environmental projects. I recommend it to readers who care about the environment and want to use blockchain technology to save it.
I work in finance and understand blockchain as well as cryptocurrency. I never thought about this technology being used to help save the planet. The author did a great job researching this subject and provided numerous case studies as examples of how blockchain is already being used to help the environment. What impressed me the most is that the author is a high school student! Well done…this is a good read and not very long either.
