For decades, I've fostered/adopted senior dogs. I've had this book on my bookcase for decades (published 2001) and read it when it first came out. This book was a "refresher course" for me, as my final pup is becoming geriatric. I'd forgotten some of the points she brings up, skimmed over others.

All in all, a good general guide for the average dog owner. Feeding, exercise, holistic option, geriatric diseases and end-of-life discussion are all touched on. There are plenty of resources out there if a dog owner wants to delve deeper into a specific topic.

I did find the final section -- replacing your deceased elder dog with a new puppy -- to be a slap in the face.

My biggest complaint about this book is the layout/typesetting. It's got big beautiful picture of dogs and their people and wide white margins to stretch it out to 144 pages -- but the font is incredibly small -- my old eyes strained to read it in any but the brightest light. Font size could have been increased and leading/margins decreased without making the book longer.

An excellent, easy-to-read book with good illustrations, graphs & photos. Each section is short, not too in-depth to make it very manageable. I found there to be much information that I underlined. I'm glad there was a section on what to do if your dog is chocking. I've always worried about that.

It was also interesting to read about the types of holistic healing available. I'd never even heard of some of them.

Lastly, I was amazed that there are actually grief hotlines a pet owner can call when one looses a pet. They are free of charge & are hosted by vet schools. Great idea!

This is a great book for a brief overview on many topics a dog owner may encounter with an older dog.

I recommend this book.

I have two lovely dogs...One of them, Emel, is almost 8 years... I really worry about his health and what will i do if i lost him coz he's getting older and older...
This book helps me a lot to concern more about his health... There is a good chapter about alternative treatment for dogs like acupuncture and aromatherapy...
Dogs are almost the same like human being, arent't they???
but sometimes they are better than human...^_^
