I read this play because I am working on the costumes for a rendition at my local college. I found this to be funny enough that I laughed out loud on several occasions. The topic is, in my opinion, extremely relevant to today's political climate in the United States. Knowing the history of the time when Gogol wrote this is very helpful in understanding how this play came about being made. Social statuses, class and wealth distribution (or lack there of) play a major role. All of which are dark subjects normally but this play makes light of such noir topics. I can't wait to see this on the stage.
