Lost in the records of time is the history of the ancient wizard of Stormfield mixing his blood with a mortal. A mortal he dubbed the Shadowlink for she bridged the magical world with the ordinary world. Within her clan were three other families. For the eldest child in each of these families, the wizard bestowed magical powers in one of the elements. There was the Aerial of the air element, the Alchemist of the water element, and the Thaumaturge of the fire element. The Shadowlink, linked to the ancient wizard, had powers in Earth and the other three elements. With Europe at the height of witch hunts, magic brought persecution. Even keeping to themselves, suspicion and rumors had the Shadowlink clan regularly moving to escape the witch hunts. Each time they moved, they used less of their powers. Still, they were persecuted. In desperation, during the 17th century the Shadowlink clan traveled in the dark of night across the vast ocean to an isolated area of Salem Village, Massachusetts. There, forbidding the use of magic and housing their birds, they were hopeful this was the final destination of reestablishing their Shadowlink community. Tragically, as Salem Village developed closer to the remote Shadowlink community, a fear of witches brought the witch hunts and trials of 1692. Desperate to escape the Gallows Hill hangings, each family decided to move in a different direction. Like the four winds, they spread into the northern, eastern, western, and southern parts of North America. Now the only things that connected them were the family Ruiries, the birds, and the Grimoires. As decades spun into centuries, that mystical connection also disappeared. It seemed the Shadowlink witches and wizards had mysteriously vanished.
I am going to try and give you a spoiler-free review as I always do. However, here I am going to give you a little at the start of the book only.
So Nessa is a mage and she has an only daughter Nathalie. Nessa is a strong woman and mother and she needs to tell her daughter she is a mage also, but she can't. There is this character Dreon and he is awesome in my humble opinion and he drives the story forward. Nessa eventually finds out she is a mage and things get complicated after that. This story has mages, gnomes, and other creatures that are some cute and other not so much.
Likes: The character of Draon The author is really goos at showing vs telling Multiple points of view it got my emotions high Love Magic She has a great nack at writing spells Love the interaction between the Characters
Dislikes: She killed Nessa way too soon in the book.
I didn't like this book, I ended loving the story. On the other hand I must let you know this is the debut story from this author. It has several things that for an avid fantasy reader may get you upset, like the author gives a long descriptions of things, however, I found it necessary to convey the idea of the scene. On the other hand some readers may disagree with me. I say give the book a chance, the story is good. It is really good. I am reading the second book and it picks up where this one left and it is worth the time. At least I feel it was worth my time. it took me a few weeks to read it only because if my busy schedule and life being complicated but this can be a weekend read. I'm so glad it's a series because when it ended I wanted to keep reading and it was great I had the second book ready for me to start. There were parts in the book I was yelling at the characters, and my family got scared at the sudden outburst. Other times I was yelling is frustrations, just because I wanted more and the author would just give me little bits.
It was an easy read. I tend to read young adults books before I pass them to my nephew and this one is going to be one of his Christmas presents this year. I would recommend this to anyone who loves young adult fantasy.
