Sebelumnya, beberapa bagian novel sudah diserialkan surat kabar. Karenanya empat atau lima bagian pertama mungkin agak membingungkan pembaca, namun novel epistola ini mengandung pemahaman realitas yang mendalam. Untuk waktu lama, banyak penulis Jepang maupun luar negeri menggunakan bentuk penulisan demikian.
