John Bunyan, a Christian writer and preacher, was born at Harrowden (one mile south-east of Bedford), in the Parish of Elstow, England. He wrote The Pilgrim's Progress, arguably the most famous published Christian allegory. In the Church of England he is remembered with a Lesser Festival on 30 August.
Pilgrim’s Progress is a rich must-read for every family, preferably several times through over the years. This is a beautifully put together journal to aid in that endeavor. Extra explanatory insets provide outstanding additional insight that explain background information and discussion on various doctrinal themes Bunyan addresses. Generous space is provided for written responses to the readings. Memory verses at the beginning of the chapter are appropriate to the chapter theme. It may be helpful to have an audio version of the reading so that the student can color visuals while listening. There is a list of potentially unknown words defined at the beginning of each chapter to aid in understanding the language of the text. Chapter breakdowns and marginal space make the book feel less intimidating. As this journal is included in the Relevant Faith basket geared towards middle schoolers as well as with the 9th grade level of Language Lessons for a Living Education, it would be interesting to have the student complete the journal in middle school and then write in their additional notes as the ninth grade course is completed. This could be a wonderful keepsake of the student’s spiritual journey as a result. An additional journal would be just as beneficial for the parent to complete during the same timeframe as the student. PIlgrim’s Progress: The Journey Journal would be a beautiful, quality discipleship tool to go through together, providing material for rich discussions and a memorable keepsake.
I have often heard of Pilgrim's Progress and wanted to read it. I like to journal and started reading the Journal Journey. I am very impressed and have a hard time putting it down. To start with, picking up a classic written in old English in modern Americas was a bit daunting, but not with this edition. The Journal Journey starts with the history of what was happing on that lead to John Bunyan writing the Pilgrims Progress. Every chapter starts with vocabulary and definitions. (Words often used then that we don't use now.) There is still the Ole English words, but in modern type. (The old s/f are in modern font, so it is easier to read.) I love how Master Books has added the biblical references to the allegories for deeper diving, as well as summaries for what Bunyan was writing. There are also beautiful black and white illustrations to go along with many of the pictures Bunyan refers to. This book is great for a journaling reader, can be used as a devotional, or even a great step to a deeper Bible study. I highly recommend this book!
As a homeschool mom and Christ follower, I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. I’ve always been intimidated to read John Bunyan’s unabridged version of Pilgrim’s Progress, so I’ve only ever read a youth version by a different author. Pilgrim’s Progress: The Journey Journal has removed all apprehension of reading this timeless classic.
The format of this book makes this story manageable to read and provides plenty of space for note taking. The Scripture references allowed me to dig into Scriptural truths within the story, and the Words to Know at the beginning of each chapter were very beneficial. The illustrations are beautifully done, and I really enjoyed the commentary within each chapter. These sections elaborate on a character, place, or idea within each chapter and how they relate to our Christian walk. There’s also an index in the back. This book was very well done, and I highly recommend it to parents and teens alike!
I really like the layout, with vocabulary words and a Bible scripture to ponder at the beginning of the passage and lots of room to turn this beloved classic into an even more cherished edition with plenty of space for your own notes, thoughts, and connections in the margins and at the end of each chapter. The images are also black and white sketch so those who enjoy artistic or excel when letting their mind ponder while coloring will also love this edition. While this works really well with Master Books' Language Lessons Level 9 curriculum, or even as an independent part of a language arts curriculum, it is a great read for an adult or a read-aloud as well.
This is a phenomenal resource that allows the reader not only the ability to read John Bunyan’s Pilgrims Progress but to also gain a better understanding of the story and its references. There are vocabulary definitions and a summary after each section for the reader to take notes. My favorite part is the Bible verse references throughout the story so the reader is able to look more in depth of God’s word and apply them to the story. This is a great read and resource for a teen or for family reading time.
The Journey Journal provides the perfect opportunity for parents and teens to record what they are learning together as they read through the included text of Pilgrim's Progress. I have enjoyed using it as a resource to look up relevant scripture and vocabulary words as well as the extra notes sprinkled throughout. I am looking forward to using it with my oldest when she is ready. From a young age she has been a huge Pilgrims Progress fan and loves to use journaling Bibles etc, so the opportunity to color and write in the book will be a perfect fit for her.
This is an unabridged version of Pilgrim’s Progress. It includes helpful vocabulary words for each chapter and a Bible verse to memorize. There is also some commentary for each chapter to give you extra guidance. Each chapter also has room for journaling and scripture verses for cross referencing. I highly recommend reading through this book. It has been a huge help in my spiritual journey. I’ve really enjoyed this particular time reading through Pilgrims Progress with the Journey Journal.
Pilgrim’s Progress: The Journey Journal contains the text of Pilgrim’s Progress, along with photographs, illustrations, and notes to enhance your understanding. I appreciate the scripture references in the margins. There is ample space for journaling, and each chapter begins with vocabulary words and a memory verse. The index at the end is helpful.
This journal version of the old classic is definitely a great introduction to the original text in Old English. I like that it gives history and words to know. The journaling spaces are also very valuable as my students work through this.
