Just…WOW!
If you regularly read self-help or spiritual books, you have to pick up this book! I read a lot of nonfiction, and I tend to be very judgmental about books. This one blew me away! I absolutely adore nonfiction stemming from the author's personal experience and expertise, and I prefer a casual, conversational tone that feels as though the author is someone who is a dear friend who happens to be more knowledgeable than you about a particular subject and shares that expertise in a friendly, engaging, and compassionate way…and they really want you to “get it.” This book is all that and more. You definitely get a sense of not only the author's voice but also her experiences in her very non-traditional upbringing and how that has affected her life since. The book lends her personal experiences with her Vedic studies and deep knowledge of Transcendental Meditation gained through growing up in that leader's community and having personal interactions with him. For all this deep background, though, the book and its ideas are completely accessible and can be applied to your life immediately, with as much simplicity or complexity as required by your nature and circumstances. The book got me thinking, and I will be revisiting it, as I know it has much more to offer than can be gleaned in one reading. The book is divided into 18 chapters that the author calls threads of wisdom. Several of these have to do with aspects of love. Sometimes just the name of the thread itself gets you thinking! Like Thread 4: Never Judge—Everything Can Be Right or Wrong; Thread 12: Start Where You Are, But See the Goal; Thread 15: Failing Leads to Greater Strength; and Thread 16: Life is in Moments—Not in Days. Even if you are already familiar with these concepts, this author's approach to them is uniquely hers and valuable. I like how each section ends with action steps you can do to integrate its thread into your life, making it richer and more meaningful. Powerful stuff and head-and-shoulders above most self-help and spiritual books out there. Highly, HIGHLY recommended!
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
