This special issue provides a sample of research that comprises the foundation of the emergent field of augmented cognition inspired fundamentally from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency program. Taken together, the contributions impart a sense of progress and constitute a first look at achievements from this very ambitious program of research in augmented cognition.
