Tafseer #49

Tafseer Surah al-Hujurat: A Commentary on the 49th Chapter of the Qur’an

Rate this book
Tafseer Soorah al-Hujurât: A Commentary on the 49th Chapter of the Qur’an is a treasury of divine advice, commandments, and prohibitions regarding common problems in social relations, including gossip, spying, arguing, and bigotry. To make the best use of this chapter, the believer needs a detailed explanation of the meanings of the verses.

Dr. Bilal Philips has based his tafseer (exegesis) on the methodology used in the classical works of tafseer. He has relied first of all on the explanations found within the Qur’an itself, then on explanations found in the Sunnah and related incidents which occurred at the time of the revelation of the verses in question. Beyond these primary sources, Dr. Philips has relied on the interpretations made by the Prophet’s Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) who were noted for their ability to interpret and comment on the Qur’an. ‘Abdullâh ibn ‘Abbâs, for example, was called ‘The interpreter of the Qur’an’ by Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). Finally, the author has made use of the grammatical explanations given in the classical tafseer works. Wherever possible, Dr. Philips has tried to apply the derived meanings of the verses to the problems of contemporary society.

Please correct me if I'm wrong; I remember hearing many years ago, from Imam Suhaib Webb, that surah Al-Hujurat is known as the surah of adab (good manners). However, since then I have never had a chance to listen to any lectures or attend any classes about this surah. So, when I saw this book in my favourite bookstore, I bought it right away.

This surah is revealed to lay down the general code of behaviour and a set of moral ideals for Muslims as well as mankind. It contains, among others, lessons about how we should speak, and the contents of our speech, how we should verify a news before believing (and spreading) it, and enjoining peace amongst us. Allah also reminded us to not scorn or look down on others, avoid suspicion, and informed us on the reason for Him creating us with different genders and tribes.

This book did not only elaborate those reminders into deeper details, there are also sections at the beginning about the science of tafseer and on recitations of the Quran, so that we know how different interpretations come about, hence we could respect variations of opinions. There is also an interpretation of one ayah which includes correcting misconceptions about our soul.

I do not know if Dr Bilal Philips have written any other tafsir books. It is highly recommended that we understand surah Al-Hujurat in order to achieve better manners, in accordance to the Quran.
