For many in the ancient land of Japan, the fox spirit is still as real as you or I. A shape-shifter from the old days, who can appear as a beautiful young woman… and in the quiet city of Kamakura, some old myths die very hard.
Forever entwined along the long river of time, two people find themselves again, an ancient curse is revived, and their original victim, now long ago, gives Penelope Middleton her very first taste of murder.
Thirty years later, Penelope still tracks the killer of her beloved, a serial killer so refined and precise that the police have never found a single clue…
In The Fox Spirit, Ash Warren takes the reader on a very intriguing journey in time. The descriptions of Japanese culture as seen by the gentle retired literature scholar, Penelope Middleton, an English speaking lover of all thongs Japanese, are delightful. The story revolves around decades long unsolved murders. Middleton, and the cast of well known friends and detectives sift through myriad subtle clues to come upon a shocking truth as to the identity of the killer and the historical connections of the victims. Truly a wonderful read. This series looks to be one of the best, alongside writers such as Ian Rankin and Louise Penny in modern who-done-its.
