The best part of this book is its length and the time required to complete it. At a little over hundred pages means an hour or two at the most. The story moves like liquid metal, clear and fast.
The story is featured deep in space aboard a space colonization ship looking for new worlds to inhabit. The incidents happen onboard with a sweeping pandemic hitting the populace and massive swathes of the population lost in its virulence. The protagonists are a couple of doctors who have managed to halt the epidemic in its track despite colossal losses and we have the human element with one of them Aidan having lost his younger brother to the virus. The loss keeps piling up on him and he is ravaged by guilty trips.
The story starts with this massive backdrop and proceeds swiftly as rumors reach their ears about the victims. The rest of the story is defined by the initial acceptance of protocol by the doctors and blind belief in the governing process. It is followed by points of revision where they try to verify details and then comes the pushback which is huge, i.e. is the government forcing a lie upon its people and why are they covering up.
The questions merits define the book.
I loved Louis' writing and this was my first book from his stable and I'm looking for more of his writings. The story is concise and packs lots of materials fit for a full length novel and not a novella. He makes the reader think about the happenings and therein lies his great strength in binding a great tale.
With so much packed in the story, I would have liked the book to have been longer to understand the world created. Space as a frontier has been explored in generations of books and it is worthwhile to read more details. I expect Louis to be writing many stories in this world as it has the potential universe of stories to explore.
Received as a review copy from Booksirens, this is an honest review. Project Outcast is an absolute, riveting tale that begins in a high before everything completely goes off the rails. After being rewarded for their bravery, doctors Aidan Cox and Steffan Ross find themselves with a whole new set of promotions and responsibilities. But aboard the colony ship Valhalla, rumors are spreading concerning of what happened to those that died of Dust Fever; and while at first Aiden had faith in the standard procedure and the Command structure- once he learns his brother Jonah's death is questionable, Aiden can't ignore the need to find answers. But the more Aiden and his friend Thomas uncover of what happened to the people angers the men and the fight turn into getting the knowledge out there... not matter the pushback they encounter.
Project Outcast is a short story with a gripping story. It is written in the future after and devastating pandemic sweeps through the population. Two doctors, Aidan and Steffan, who came up with the cure, are celebrated and given high level jobs. But some things seem to be off. As Aiden digs deeper, what he discovers is too horrible to imagine. Could the government be keeping secrets not only from the general population, but the doctors who discovered the cure? There are two sides to the solution – neither is totally right. Great characters, and the story was well written. Thanks to BookSiren for the ARC of this book.
Project Outcast is a nice prelude to Goliath Fallen. It's starts a bit slow, but not for long, it quickly picks up the pace and it won't let you look the other way.
Once things are set in motion, questions start to pile up and events turn unexpectedly. I like how every character is easily distinguishable from one another, and you can tell the author has taken his time to craft each relationship carefully.
It opens up the lore for the generation starships and helps the reader picture how everyday life was in the ships, which becomes a good foundation for the sequel.
Easy recommendation from me, it's short and intense.
Project Outcast is a Goliath Fallen Story by A C Louis. I found this novella to be interesting. Dr Aidan Cox and Dr Steffan Ross are hailed as heros for the creation of a drug that stopped a plague. Aidan begins looking into things that just don't add up. Aidan is a man of integrity and what he uncovered makes him choose a side. Can government lie to people for the good of everyone? I think this story is deep and made me think. Good characters with a tale that is neither black or white. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It's full of interesting characters, excellent world building that helps the reader truly envision the scenes and more. The story itself is well crafted and the dialogue comes over as natural. The pacing is excellent and the tension builds up as you turn the pages. And believe me, you'll turn the pages! If you enjoy smart sci-fi with a great plot and likeable characters, then this is definitely for you.

Thanks to BookSirens for the ARC. The book lives up to its description with a mystery on board a space colonization ship. The mystery is what happened to the main character’s brother after a pandemic. Aidan and others go through lots of thrills to find this out. The end is a cliffhanger I will tell you that. The world building is well done.
