If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already thought of your leadership communication style already and likely won’t find anything too ground breaking. (If you’re never thought of your leadership communication style, this might actually be ground breaking for you!) Still, this book offers insights and nuance that I found valuable and had me thinking on how I could be a more effective communicator. I think the material was well presented and good for causing one to be insightful about their communication style. 4 stars simply because it was a bit dry at times but but maybe that’s unfair because I’m not sure anyone can make leadership communication that exciting.
Wouldn’t really recommend as a casual read but more of a professional (and maybe personal) development book.
This book was required reading for a university class. If it wasn’t a required reading, I would have stopped after he talked about the Judeo-Christian beliefs being myths. 😑
I listened to the audiobook, read by George Guidall (one of my favorite audiobook readers). Leading Out Loud is about instructing leaders how to communicate, to get followers to follow, to persuade and inspire. It's advice seems sound to me, and involves a fair amount of writing. A true leader needs to develop a written Communications Guide, and the book describes how to do it, and gives plenty of examples. It's very thorough, easy to understand, and concise.
My only minor gripe is the examples Mr. Pearce uses to make his points. Quite a few examples of leader communications come from the business world, and that's fine. Unfortunately he also chooses many from the political world. If he felt he had to do that, he should have chosen examples from both major political parties, so as not t disappoint readers. Instead, about 90% of his examples are from members of one party and 10% from members of the other. That's one way to turn off 50% of readers.
Still, a very useful book and I recommend it to any leader of any sort of group who wants to change something.
