All Christian churches are Christian, of course, but the denomination called the "Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)" is uniquely American, with a history all its own. It can claim roots in the Kentucky pioneer movement of the late Eighteenth Century, and then through mergers and reorganization emerged as a major Protestant denomination, the latest and probably last of the so-called "Mainline" denominations, in the 1960's.
This CHALICE HYMNAL pew edition (usually in a red cover, but occasionally you may see blue or black) debuted in 1995 as the official hymnal for Disciples. It's easily recognizable by the Disciples logo of chalice-and-cross on the cover. It's a good, general-purpose hymnal similar, but not superior to, the current hymnals of the United Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church-USA. It was sad, early in this decade, when this hymnal was allowed to drift out of print, though occasional reprintings are authorized -- currently it is unavailable but if you really want an unused copy, try disciples dot org. Thus this hardbound CHALICE HYMNAL is the latest in Disciples history, and owing to emergent on-screen media and other digital technologies, may well be its last.
