Liʻā is the case in which the husband accuses his wife of adultery and he does not have four witnesses to establish his claim against the wife, who refuses to confess and persists in denying the accusation. Consequently, the husband as well as the one who accuses chaste women of fornication receive a punishment of eighty lashes unless he invokes Allāh four times that he is telling the truth regarding his claim. Then, in the fifth call, he has to invoke Allāh's curse upon himself if he is lying. As a result, the Hadd punishment -whipping or imprisonment-will be imposed on her until she confesses. For the accused wife, in order to avert the punishment, she has to counter such an accusation with liʻān by invoking Allāh's name four times that the husband is lying regarding his indictment of fornication. While swearing for the fifth time, she has to invoke Allāh's curse upon herself if he is telling the truth.
