The residents of an elder care facility are dying from a mysterious, withering illness. To lighten the mood and entertain the residents during the troubling times, Thomas a ten years old with a banjo and scratchy voice is accompanied by his friend Vernon on the violin come to play for a Senior Center potluck one summer evening. The music stirs the memories of a few of the ancient souls at the facility and sparks the ire of some Dark Elves who are up to no good. The story was originally published in 13 episode as The Worlds of the Orb on Kindle Vella.
Thomas and the Rusty Strings of Death expands upon the Outer Limits meets Brothers Grim sci-fi fairytale cosmos that Quick introduced (at least to me) in the Worlds of the Orb. The pacing is perfect, and the tangled web of characters pulls together smoothly in the end. At this point, I've lost count of how many of WC Quick's stories and books I've read, but if he keeps writing them, I'll keep reading them.
