Tokens and Towers #1-3

Tokens and Towers Box Set

Rate this book
A writer-turned-barbarian and a reader-turned-spellbook team up in this blazing LitRPG tower climber!

Randy Lionheart used to be your typical down-on-his-luck fantasy writer--sure of himself but secretly insecure, penniless, prone to rants, and with more ideas than he has good sense.

All of this changes once he is mysteriously portaled to the fantasy world of Genera, where he accidently becomes a barbarian.

Yes, accidently. It's complicated.

After joining forces with a magical neurodivergent spellbook named Clovis, Randy finds his stride battling violent monsters, facing insane challenges, and solving complicated puzzles in an effort to reach the top of a tower.

The scary part? If he dies in Genera, he's gone for good.

The not-so-scary part? If Randy makes it to the top of the tower, he gets to make a choice: return to his world, live his life in comfort at the top of the tower, or go back to the bottom and start the climb again.

Either way, it's going to be an uphill battle, one that will try Randy's wits, his newfound powers, his budding friendship with Clovis the spellbook, and the shaky alliances he makes with other ascendants like him.

Tokens and Towers channels the spirit of the LitRPG genre, from its love and misuses of stats, to isekai antics, pop culture humor, and everything in between.

About the series: Tokens and Towers is a humorous fantasy LitRPG series by Amazon bestseller Harmon Cooper, author of Monster Hunt NYC, Proxima Legends, and The Feedback Loop. This is Harmon's seventh LitRPG series, one jam-packed with genre Easter eggs, fantasy tropes turned upside down, a ton of heart, and a John Wick's worth of action.

I adored this series!

As the fans used to sing from the Scottish football terracing a number of decades ago, "It's mental, it's crazy, it's off its ****ing head!" (poetic licence taken), this describes 'Tokens and Towers' to a 'T'.

Randall Lionheart, an author currently suffering from writer's block, - known as 'Randy' to be cool, except when his previous pen name is mentioned, and it's mentioned by Clovis rather a lot. Clovis is a spellbook and a reader, and Lionheart's unorthodox saviour. Initially unwanted, but he grows on Randy... and the reader.

Clovis is a wonderfully un-streetwise character. His childlike innocence, naivety, and inability to lie, opens the duo up to many dangers. However, there is so much humour in here. The hamsters! Oh, my god, the hamsters! Ha! Something a wee bit different from Harmon Cooper, nevertheless you'll turn the pages at speed to see what antics and adventures the duo get up to, and out of, I snorted and giggled all the way.

This is SO MUCH FUN and has everything I enjoy reading:

*big breath*

- Brilliant humour and banter making you do that horrible snorting noise and embarrassing yourself;
- zombies (yes, zombies!);
- action-packed and a page-turner (you'll zoom through it, honest);
- lots of adventure and cunning;
- more twists and turns than that long twisty road in San Francisco;
- a shockingly mutilated hamster beanie *sob*;
- having to team up with people you'd rather not have anything to do with;
- Clovis' teenage innocent flirting with a vampire and also a faun (classic!);
- training and fighting a dragon (yes, a dragon!);
- a different realm with each floor, and this one is
T H E D R A G O L Y M P I C S ! Here. We. Go!

As usual, the author's world building is exceptional, making the reader feel that they are right there in the thick of the action, experiencing the challenges along with Randy and Clovis. The plot and storyline are quality and well-written, the action is fast and exciting, and it's all executed with LitRPG Easter eggs and Mr Cooper's trademark snorting humour, or is it just me that snorts? I don't think so, somehow.

I'm really sad that this has finished however, I ADORE the ending. You'll see what I mean...

If you haven't read this series, don't hesitate to buy it. You won't regret it, honest!

Mad Lad writing

This is an unusual one for Cooper, a bit of a mix from the Proxima legends and a zanier fresher style with a tower climbing basis. With the expected quality world building from Cooper, this may not be for all, but the writing is well done, and it's something different in the LitRPG world. Best of all, this is an entire series in 1 box set.
