Hailed by Thru-Hiking legend T-Rex as "the greatest collection of short-stories concerning the Appalachian Trail",
This collection of stories chronicles the foibles and misadventures of one monomaniacal man's quest for adventure and meaning. Follow him and his new wife along a 2200 mile trek across the eastern United States. Laugh at him as he loses his mind in sickness and unbearable heat. Tremble with him as he encounters legends and notoriously harmful black bears. Weep with him as he ponders whether or not he has gained any worldly insight or if he has just become pretentious and arrogant.
With energy and flourish, Patrick Nimon describes thru-hiking in a way never before imagined - by only featuring the highlights. Nimon's "Selected Stories" is sure to make you laugh, cry, or at least just mildly enjoy a decent sized short-story collection.
This is the first book I've read that someone I know wrote, so I was a bit nervous I might not like it. But those fears were quickly allayed because this was really enjoyable. I am not a camper at all, but these stories have me wanting to try to hike for a few days just to see what it's all about. The story about the voices in New Hampshire was probably my favorite, but honestly, all of the stories were intriguing and I feel like Stitches did a good job of helping me understand how tired/overwhelmed/in awe he was feeling on the journey. Good stuff!
