دراسة لظاهرة إجتماعية إقتصادية كان لها أثر بالغ فى تاريخ مصر طوال ما يزيد عن قرن من الزمان تركت خلاله آثاراً بارزة على الحياة الإقتصادية والإجتماعية والسياسية. ألا وهى ظاهرة "الملكيات الزراعية الكبيرة" التى كان نشوؤها فى الربع الأول من القرن التاسع عشر، حين أخذت إنعامات محمد على باشا -والى مصر- على بعض الأفراد بالأطيان تترى، بغرض إستصلاح تلك الأراضى وزيادة الثروة الإقتصادية للبلاد وتكوين طبقة من أرباب الأطيان تدبن بنعمتها للجالس على أريكة الحكم، ومن ثم تتفانى فى خدمة النظام وتعمل على تدعيم أركانه.
