Trilby and Other Plays is a new selection of English plays that had wide success on both sides of the Atlantic. Each achieved its greatest fame through the talents of a particular star performer. Under the General Editorship of Michael Cordner of the University of York, the texts of the plays have been newly edited and are presented with a scholarly Introduction and detailed annotation. Included in this volume are Jack Sheppard, The Corsican Brothers, Our American Cousin, and Trilby
Jack Sheppard by J. B. Buckstone: The story of a young theif that was adapted from a novel. Done in only 4 acts, it's a pretty quick read. 4 stars
The Corsican Brothers by Dion Boucicault: A Corsican man in Paris communicates his death telepathically to his twin brother at home. Short and to the point, I wish I could have seen this play on stage. 4 stars
Our American Cousin by E. A. Sothern: This is the play Lincoln was watching while assasinated. The banter between characters is usually funny and quick--I laughed out loud quite a few times. Some of the characters are just too ridiculous, however, and I became bored with them by the end. 4 stars.
Trilby by Paul Potter: This one reminded me of the opera. The last act wasn't necessary; it could have easily been a 3 act play. 4 stars
