I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I will admit that at first glance, this subject matter has nothing to do with me. I am not in the music industry, nor do I aspire to be. That being said, I am a creative person and I have my own dream of becoming an author. I was blown away by how much of this book is relevant to any kind of creative endeavour. Tara’s writing is clear and concise and she does a great job of giving tips and laying out actionable items for you to follow. There are key takeaways and questions for each chapter. I was able to answer all the questions for myself just by tweaking the language from “music” to “writing.”
She talks a lot about “making it” and what that really means. Is it being “discovered,” and if so, by who? She invites the reader to reframe these concepts in their mind and define for themselves what success means. You can’t be waiting for someone to come pluck you out of obscurity, you instead need to forge your own path by doing work that feels meaningful to you. That really resonated with me because a lot of the language used around making it in music is similar to making it as an author. There’s a lot of rhetoric around it not being a real job, impossible to make money, what’s your plan B, etc, etc.
I would highly recommend this for anyone who wants to pursue their art whether that be music, writing, visual art, etc.
