About the author

Darrell Schweitzer is an American writer, editor, and essayist in the field of speculative fiction. Much of his focus has been on dark fantasy and horror, although he does also work in science fiction and fantasy.

Schweitzer is also a prolific writer of literary criticism and editor of collections of essays on various writers within his preferred genres.

I picked this up mainly for more of Schweitzer's fantasy stories, after reading his wonderful collection Echoes of the Goddess: Tales of Terror and Wonder from the End of Time. A few of the stories here appear in that collection as well, all excellent. In addition, I found The Sorcerer Evoragdou, The Mysteries Of The Faceless King and King Yvorian's Wager among my favorites here. Each features what I now consider to be the real hallmark of Schweitzer's excellence - evocative fantastical settings that deftly blur the line between dream or otherworldly settings and reality, to haunting effect. Many follow unassuming, coming-of-age protagonists as they journey forth in search of their fate, and are marked by a sense of mystery, sorrow and longing. Simply wonderful.

I mostly liked these, except for the totally stupid Kvetchula, and Kvetchula's Daughter. Mostly fantasy, some of which I would compare to the work of Lord Dunsany, also a few cosmic horror.
