This is another self help book that needs some work to make it really worth reading. Ms. Omeara has the chops and the biography to write such a book but I found it slightly flippant and confusing. I understand the concept behind the book, we really need to look past things like stereotypes, generalities, labels and expert opinions and start thinking for ourselves. But like most self help books, the people who really need to be reading it aren't the ones picking it up. In this world of instant gratification and “I saw it on the internet so it must be true” we really do need to think for ourselves and look past someone else’s reason for hating and make informed decisions. This book is great at pointing these things out but then it gives “antidote suggestions” as to how we can respond to the haters and naysayers to negate their hate rhetoric, but these antidotes are sometime confusing and unless you've actually been faced with that particular statement you would have no idea what she meant by her suggested response. Some of them could also be construed as offensive or misinformed in this politically correct society. And I have to admit though I am more likely to be the open-minded person in the conversation some of her suggested responses seem trite and insulting to me and instead of diffusing a situation might actually make it worse. I know it’s all about each individual’s perception of an event and these responses could be used but the book did not make me a believer. I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

THIS IS A SATIRICAL REVIEW I haven't really read the book but have to satisfy my addiction to words here goes.

Nancy O-Me-a-RA is like GOD! Her bright rays of nourishing light will shine into your eyes like a cops nightstick or was that a flashlight god was i drunk i can barely remember, just this red welt won't go away. Anyway they said I could write my attorney so here I am. While I was in the holding cell awaiting try'll the turnkey gave me this book. I was so hungry i tried to eat it (did someone spike my vodka with drugs?) anyway my cop-y is dogeared... Thing is

OMEARA'S BOOK IS AWESOME!

Why?

It's dripping with sarcasm AND useful instructions! At my next Hitler Youth Fourth Reich club meeting I am bringing free review copies for allllllll my little brown shirted friends!

Well, that's all I've got to say. You can read a lot into this book. It's a "how to manual" all right -- just not like you think it is!

As is often the case I received this book free for the purposes of review. Also as usual I will nonetheless be absolutely candid about it below despite the obvious risk of being branded a "hater"

Essentially this book tries to be exactly what the subtitle suggests, a handbook for defusing all the obnoxious and baseless hatred that appears in society today. It goes through various source of misunderstanding between people from lies to competitive rivalries and provides strategies to defuse those situations or stop them before they start.

On the positive side, the book is a much needed one and its heart is in the right place. It wants us all to get along and buried in this little tome there is the seed of exactly the right idea. If you boiled this down and could properly internalize it you'd have many of the tools required to get people to stop being such jerks to each other.

To the negative side, the consumption of that information is really a chore. The book is really just a list of lists, hundreds of examples how hate starts and hundreds of mini-paragraphs outlining how you might disperse those negative feelings. Unfortunately, the format of the book is such that there are no paragraph breaks of bulletpoints so what looks like a connected series of statements is really just a list. This makes the whole thing very difficult to digest or internalize since you have no clue where example 57 stops and example 58 stars. Further, the book's larger overall organization seems haphazard and the author regularly digresses in directions that take us far afield of the point. It's almost as if we're being lectured to by an irritated older sibling at times.

In summary, I like the idea but the execution could use some considerable tidying up.

Creating Hate is a straight forward and practical look at how and why hate is created in today’s society. The book is written in a very approachable and easy to read manner, which helps make this difficult and complicated topic easier to tackle as a reader. The chapters take a closer look at many topics, including how ‘experts’ in the media often have their own agenda and how to spot this, how simplistic labels and speech can cause far reaching effects, how people can use unfounded fear to manipulate, etc. Most of the topics focus on things that may affect a typical, everyday life, and how to mentally and verbally challenge hate creating speech or actions you see in your day to day living. I think that the author gives useful advice on how to make sure you are not thinking in generalities, as this can create a very inaccurate take on the world around you. I think her best points revolve around making sure you are looking for the hidden agenda behind these various issues, to really understand what people are trying to accomplish. She shows how this can help you decide what to believe, and whose information to trust.

This is a book that delves into the belly of hate. The book lays out examples of how individuals, groups, organizations can instigate hostility towards people they consider different. One example presented in the book is how the media can spew and exaggerate lies. Thus, perpetuating the myth that certain people are considered different, so they must be dangerous. The author provides different techniques and tactics to expose the truth behind stereotypes, generalities, labels, and rumors. I am inspired by this book to be more courageous and willingness to defend the truth. This way little by little the seeds of hope continue to grow.

This book was a very enjoyable read. It was swift and cut to the chase, which I love with these type of writings. It is bursting with positivism and as the title says, it's "practical".

There are so many morally presumptuous books out there that when you read them you feel a sense of darkness and hate, this one without pretending to be a book about morality is much more noble and kind-hearted without loosing its logic basis.

Very recommended and a very pleasant book!

This is a simplistic book of one woman's view of how to stop hate. She uses no research models, no theories, no research except what she has observed and her solution is to turn the topic around to something positive. I received a review copy of this book from Goodreads. I am rating it with one star because that is the only way to get my review recorded. Save your money.
