This book is behind the scenes of Derek Jarman’s movie, Caravaggio. In this production Jarman “bowed to narrative” as he says here, and the correspondence between famous paintings and their creation is a strong theme.
The movie does not try to paint the artist into a box — rather he still roams free and enigmatic. The commentaries by Jarman in the book, as well as the many photos, some in colour, are delightful.
Best enjoyed after viewing the movie, to enrich and deepen the experience.
Read in one sitting over about an hour and a half. I think it's necessary that I mention that I'm a massive Derek Jarman fan, and am currently working on a play adaptation of Caravaggio (which is how I came across this book).
This isn't the final script for the film- there's a lot more voiceover, Porto Ercole isn't mentioned to the audience. But god, it's gorgeous, and truly adds to the experience of the film. The photos within are developed beautifully, and the lyrical language is incredible.
really interesting to read as a fan of the film. i loved the insight into production and the thought processes behind the film, as well as seeing the behind the scenes photos
