Relationship Equity: Your Cornerstone Investment to Great Gains in Business and Life

Rate this book
Richard Walker puts it “Humanity is the core of our business.” In his new book, Walker takes his readers on a journey of discovery, examining a principle with the power to revolutionize both business and personal lives.

Walker describes Relationship Equity as the good faith that you can build up in your relationships by investing in them faithfully and steadily, with no expectation of reaping a return. As the CEO of a prominent IT consulting firm, York Solutions, Richard has applied the principle to business success as he builds the tech talent pool and helps professionals develop their careers.

He explains that the relationships we forge with others are of supreme importance – and when you get those right, the rest will follow. “If you are friend who is genuine,” he writes, “you will have genuine friends – and lo and behold, they will want to help you just as you have helped them.”

Sound simple? It’s not. Relationship Equity has many nuances, and Walker explores them all in Relationship Your Cornerstone Investment to Great Gains in Business and Life. To explain how he developed the philosophy, he escorts his readers back to the small-town world of his youth in northern England, then onward to his corporate life at the helm of a thriving American tech company.

“In our families, our businesses, our communities, our world, we need one another,” Walker writes. “We are not islands unto ourselves.” In his new book, he shows us what he and his company are doing today to pay forward the many kindnesses that have come his way through the years. Richard Walker has made it his business to change lives for the better, and York’s mission statement reflects that.

Relationship Equity is a brilliant concept and this book explains why, but unfortunately not "how." It felt like part autobiography, part sales pitch, and part team motivational huddle. It only kicked the ball around and never quite made it into the net.

Thank you to Goodreads for offering this title in their giveaways. This opinion is entirely my own.

Anthony Walker’s Relationship Equity takes on the age-old question of why some relationships feel like a team sport while others feel like a one-sided charity drive. Walker frames his argument around the idea that healthy partnerships thrive on fairness, reciprocity, and shared responsibility—not on one person carrying the weight while the other just enjoys the ride. The concept of “equity” is refreshingly practical: instead of chasing romance-novel perfection, Walker reminds us that love often comes down to who’s folding the laundry, who’s paying the bills, and who’s listening without checking their phone every two minutes.

The strength of Walker’s book lies in how relatable it is. He writes with clarity, blending psychology, anecdotes, and a touch of straight-talking realism that cuts through the fluff. At the same time, there’s room for laughter: he pokes fun at the way couples keep score (“I did the dishes three times this week, so why is the Wi-Fi bill still on me?”) and calls out our tendency to treat relationships like discount sales—always looking for more while doing less. His advice is grounded, but never heavy-handed, making the reader feel like they’re talking to a witty, no-nonsense friend who has been there and learned the hard way.

Ultimately, Relationship Equity is both a mirror and a manual. It makes you laugh at your own quirks while nudging you toward healthier habits of giving, sharing, and communicating. Walker’s message is clear: love isn’t about 50/50 all the time, but about showing up in ways that matter most—and not keeping score like a stingy accountant. For readers tired of sugar-coated relationship advice, this book is a refreshing blend of honesty, humor, and practical wisdom.

"The relationships we forge with others are of supreme importance. When you get those right, the rest follows."- this is one of the core messages for me from the book. This book is about relationships and how they can influence our lives and future. Networking in the right way, nurturing relationships can be supportive and beneficial for both sides. The book contains interesting stories that can help to reflect on life situations.

I'm sorry, but I couldn't finish. Got about 40% in and the author started to repeat stories he already told earlier in the book. There still wasn't much practical advice outside of "network" and create friendships. And the golf talk was just too much (even though I like golf!)

Based on 40% of the book, I would give 2 stars, but giving the benefit of the doubt that there are some good nuggets later worth an extra star. I just don't have the patience to find them.

It started out with promise before quickly turning repetitive. This book focuses mostly on the author's experience and company and what they're doing with the repetitive "relationship equity got me there."

In summary:
- Work hard at whatever you do
- Say yes to new opportunities
- Talk to everyone, get to know them, figure out how you can help them. Then help them

The author has a great sense of humor. The book has great stories and is a good book about networking, taking care of the relationships in your life, and an interesting look on relationship equity a person may not of considered. It is a different perspective and interesting concept.

🖋️ “At York Solutions . . .” seems to be the underlying statement and theme of this book, forty-five times. That became distracting since it started coming across like a sales pitch in a kiosk in the mall. The points made outside of that pitch are what I already know, so I learned little. 🗑 Conversely, other readers may find this story their road to solutions and right up their alley. ♦️ I received a Kindle eBook copy via the Goodreads Giveaway Program. To the author at York Solutions, thank you. 😀
