Elementary school classrooms are increasingly relying on a discovery method for the teaching of mathematics. Mathematics for Elementary Teachers thoroughly prepares preservice teachers to use this approach as it has been proven to increase their depth of understanding of mathematics. In this text, topics are organized by operation, rather than number type, and time is spent explaining why the math works, rather than just on the mechanics of how it works. Fully integrated activities are found in the book and in an accompanying Activities Manual. As a result, students engage, explore, discuss, and ultimately reach true understanding of the approach and of mathematics.
Counting this towards my reading challenge as an ego-boost to myself; in all honesty a lot of me "reading" this book was just me looking at the pictures. I guess I would say this book is good, since it taught me math for my wildly expensive online math course. Indeed, I wish I had simply bought the book and read (or looked at the pictures in) it, rather than paid for the entire course, which was formatted along the lines of "read this book, do the exercises in it, and then complete online assignments and quizzes based on what you learned in the book, for a grade" (there was a prof but he did not interact with us and in fact I do not know how to pronounce his last name). So, in short, if you read this book cover to cover and do some of the exercises, you will learn just as much math as a very expensive course at an accredited university, and for much, much cheaper.
I read this for my math class this semester (yes, I read the whole thing). It was helpful with some topics, but not all. It gave very brief descriptions, but had lots of good activities!
