Amazing book about a fascinating subject. The book looks at a number of automata arranged in the book by categories and there is a last chapter on some of the best tricks utilized in making these marvelous mechanical artworks feel alive and amusing to look at. Each automaton is described and then it’s mechanical workings are explained and each will have boxes listing some data, one of those is one that gives “the secret” on how the special feature of a specific automaton is being achieved, as the title of the book suggests. There’s also a lot of technical schematic drawings of the mechanisms, which for me it’s the very definition of a picture is worth a thousand words, for almost all the time it’s how I “get” how it works after getting often lost in the text description (which is 100% a lack on my part, not the author, his knowledge on automata is encyclopedic and his descriptions are clear and follow the mechanisms in a detailed way) and so I always look at the drawings first then read the text which starts to make more sense to me after understanding the drawing. And it goes without saying, there’s lots of photos of said automatons.
Personal notes and observations about automatons:
((First let me clarify that I’m a dilettante of sorts regarding this subject. I’m a jack of all trades when it comes to my curiosities and interests)).
- there is a dreamlike nature to these automatons, a phantasmagorical quality. With the moving eyes, the face expressions the costumes the silk the velvet the characters and the music box tunes, it’s fascinating! I watched it in action on the author’s YouTube channel and other channels. I envisioned a basement filled with vintage furniture and vintage furniture scents and lots of automatons!
- there is something charming and satisfying about the simple (yet clever) tangible nature of the mechanisms of these charming automatons. Something that is missing from today’s low quality mass produced junk.
- Modern automatons (1980s and onwards) tend to expose the mechanism in contrast to vintage ones where the mechanism is purely functional. This reminds of mechanical watches today that almost always shows the mechanism in the back of the case.
- I just read a book about Marc Davis, a master animator and imagineer behind a lot of Disney park’s original rides. There’s a lot of similarities between designing the theme of an automaton and an animatronic. And this goes also to the mechanics of the original early ones to a certain degree. One can think of a single automaton as a sentence telling a narrative, the same goes with an animatronic, but the latter is part of an article telling a wider narrative! The article being the whole ride. I have extra appreciation for the thought that went into making these automatons once I saw how hard it is to make an animatronic with all of the modern conveniences like electric motors and such!
- The Jaquet Droz 1768 Automatons blew my mind to smithereens! Just look it up on YouTube and you’ll understand!
- The Decapitated Drinking Horse mechanism is brilliant! Totally brilliant!
- The Leaping Tiger is so brilliant!
- The Trapeze Acrobat reminds me of a toy I owned way way back. It’s one of those water filled toys and a pump that pumps a jet of water which moves things about in the water. Mine had a flat basketball player with tons of articulated joints that makes him when activated by the water jet take the craziest poses and jumps while slam dunking!
A couple of ideas that came to me while reading the book:
- I envisioned an automaton made (the artwork) by the amazing Tom Kuebler! It’ll be a fascinating one and the very stuff of nightmares!!
- I envisioned an automaton utilizing the glass hologram technique, like maybe a mythical being appearing and disappearing in a flash or ghosts dancing like the ones from The Haunted Mansion, wouldn’t be cool?
- I envisioned someone mummifying his head like Jeremy Bentham but adding automaton mechanisms that makes him move his eyes and his mouth and a recording of his voice in a cylinder! It’ll be horrific!
- I envisioned an automaton of a dandy monkey in a fancy yellow jacket and light pink pants. The face is realistic but extra humanoid and he smiles sometimes without showing his teeth, eye movements and all. In one hand there’s a cigarette, the other he’s causally tapping on his thigh. He’s also wearing a perfume of sorts, part of the mechanism, it gets sprayed when turned on. The thing is life size. The perfume is the novelty here because it crates an atmosphere and adds some realism to the monkey figure!
Anyway anyhow! Totally loved this book, and the realm of automatons is still full of possibilities and innovation.
كتاب رائع يتناول موضوعًا شيقًا. يستعرض الكتاب عددًا من الآلات ذاتية الحركة(الاتوماتون)، مصنفة حسب الفئات، ويحتوي على فصل أخير يتناول بعضًا من أفضل الحيل المستخدمة لجعل هذه الأعمال الفنية الميكانيكية المذهلة تبدو نابضة بالحياة وممتعة للنظر. يُوصف كل جهاز ذاتي الحركة، ثم تُشرح آلية عمله الميكانيكية، ويحتوي كل وصف على مربعات تتضمن بعض البيانات، أحدها يكشف "سر" كيفية تحقيق الميزة الخاصة لجهاز معين، كما يوحي عنوان الكتاب. يحتوي الكتاب أيضًا على العديد من الرسومات التخطيطية التقنية للآليات، والتي تُجسد بالنسبة لي خير تجسيد لمقولة "الصورة بألف كلمة"، فهي في أغلب الأحيان الطريقة التي أفهم بها كيفية عمل الآلة بعد أن أضيع غالبًا في وصف النص (وهذا قصورٌ مني تمامًا، وليس من الكاتب، فمعرفته بالآلات ذاتية الحركة موسوعية، ووصفه واضحٌ ويشرح الآليات بتفصيلٍ دقيق)، لذا أنظر دائمًا إلى الرسومات أولًا ثم أقرأ النص الذي يصبح أكثر وضوحًا بالنسبة لي بعد فهم الرسم. وغنيٌ عن البيان أن هناك الكثير من صور هذه الآلات.

تتميز هذه الآلات المتحركة بطابع حالم، وجاذبية خيالية. بعيونها المتحركة، وتعبيرات وجوهها، وأزيائها، وحريرها، ومخملها، وشخصياتها، وألحان صندوق الموسيقى، إنها آسرة! شاهدتها وهي تعمل على قناة المؤلف على يوتيوب وقنوات أخرى. تخيلت قبوًا مليئًا بالأثاث العتيق وروائحه، والكثير من الآلات المتحركة!
هناك سحر ورضا في بساطة (وذكاء) آليات هذه الآلات الساحرة. شيء نفتقده في البضائع الرخيصة المنتجة بكميات كبيرة اليوم.
تميل الآلات الحديثة (منذ ثمانينيات القرن الماضي فصاعدًا) إلى إظهار آلية عملها، على عكس الآلات القديمة التي تقتصر آلية عملها على الجانب الوظيفي فقط. وهذا يُذكّرنا بالساعات الميكانيكية الحديثة التي تُظهر آلية عملها دائمًا تقريبًا في الجزء الخلفي من العلبة.
قرأتُ مؤخرًا كتابًا عن مارك ديفيس، وهو رسام ومُصمّم رسوم متحركة بارع، كان وراء العديد من الألعاب الأصلية في منتزهات ديزني. ثمة تشابه كبير بين تصميم فكرة الاناماترونيك والآلة المتحركة. وينطبق هذا أيضًا، إلى حد ما، على آليات عمل النماذج الأولى من الاناماترونيك. يُمكن اعتبار الآلة الواحدة بمثابة جملة تروي قصة، وينطبق الأمر نفسه على الاناماترونيك، ولكن الأخيرة تُشكّل جزءًا من مقال يروي قصة أوسع! المقال هو اللعبة بكاملها. ازداد تقديري للجهد المبذول في صناعة هذه الآلات بعد أن رأيت مدى صعوبة صناعة آلة متحركة بكل وسائل الراحة الحديثة، مثل المحركات الكهربائية وغيرها!
- آلات جاكيه دروز 1768 الآلية أبهرتني تمامًا! ابحث عنها على يوتيوب وستفهم!
- آلية الحصان الشارب المقطوع الرأس رائعة! رائعة بكل معنى الكلمة!
- النمر القافز رائع للغاية!
- لاعب الأكروبات على الأرجوحة يذكرني بلعبة كنت أملكها منذ زمن بعيد. إنها من تلك الألعاب المائية التي تعمل بمضخة تدفع تيارًا مائيًا يحرك الأشياء في الماء. كانت لعبتي تحتوي على لاعب كرة سلة مسطح بمفاصل كثيرة تجعله، عند تشغيله بواسطة تيار الماء، يتخذ وضعيات مجنونة ويقفز وكأنه يسدد كرة سلة!
بعض الأفكار التي خطرت لي أثناء قراءة الكتاب:
- تخيلتُ آلةً متحركةً من صنع الفنان المذهل توم كوبلر! ستكون رائعةً ومرعبةً للغاية! وكابوس حقيقي!
تخيلتُ آلةً متحركةً تستخدم تقنية الهولوغرام الزجاجي، ربما كائنًا أسطوريًا يظهر ويختفي في ومضة، أو أشباحًا ترقص مثل تلك الموجودة في لعبة "البيت المسكون"، ألن يكون ذلك رائعًا؟
تخيلتُ شخصًا يُحنّط رأسه مثل جيريمي بنثام، لكن مع إضافة آلياتٍ آليةٍ تُحرّك عينيه وفمه، وتسجيلٍ لصوته في أسطوانة! سيكون ذلك مرعبًا!
تخيلتُ آلةً متحركةً لقردٍ أنيقٍ يرتدي سترةً صفراءَ فاخرةً وبنطالًا ورديًا فاتحًا. وجهه واقعيٌّ لكنه شديدُ الشبه بالبشر، ويبتسم أحيانًا دون أن يُظهر أسنانه، مع حركات عينيه. في إحدى يديه سيجارة، وفي الأخرى ينقر على فخذه برفق. كما أنه يضع نوعًا من العطر، وهو جزءٌ من الآلية، يُرشّ عند تشغيله. الشيء بالحجم الطبيعي. العطر هو العنصر الجديد هنا لأنه يخلق جواً مميزاً ويضفي بعض الواقعية على مجسم القرد!
على أي حال! لقد أحببت هذا الكتاب تماماً، ولا يزال عالم الآلات مليئاً بالإمكانيات والابتكارات.
